Saskatoon University (provincial Electoral District)
Saskatoon University is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Revived as a result of the 2013 revision of Saskatchewan's electoral districts, it was last contested in the 2020 election. Saskatoon University was first created in 1971 and was in existence from 1971 to 1975 and again from 1982 to 1991. The district's first incarnation was merged into Saskatoon Centre in 1975 and its second incarnation was merged into Saskatoon Sutherland-University in 1991. Jennifer Bowes
Jennifer Bowes is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in the 2020 Saskatchewan general election. She represents the electoral district of Saskatoon University as a member of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party caucus. Political career Bowes first ran for provincial office in the 2016 Saskatchewan general election, 2016 election in the newly created riding of Saskatoon University (provincial electoral district), Saskatoon University. There she finished second to Saskatchewan Party candidate and former Saskatoon City Councillor Eric Olauson by a margin of 348 votes. Bowes ran again in the 2020 Saskatchewan general election, 2020 election, challenging the incumbent Olauson and winning the seat by a margin of 495 votes. 1982 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1982 Saskatchewan general election was held on April 26, 1982, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Progressive Conservative Party, led by Grant Devine, defeated the New Democratic Party government of Premier Allan Blakeney, which had governed the province since the 1971 election. The Tories won over half the popular vote, and a large majority in the legislature – the first time that the party had won an outright majority, and making Devine only the second Tory premier in the province's history. The only other time that the Tories had ever led a government was after the 1929 election, when James Anderson led a coalition government of Conservatives, Progressives and independents. The NDP vote fell to its lowest level since 1938, and the party lost 35 of its 44 seats in the legislature – the second-worst defeat of a sitting government in the province's history, behind only the Saskatchewan Liberal Party's 38-seat loss in 1944. Saskatchewan Party
The Saskatchewan Party is a centre-right political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Since 2007, it has been the province's governing party; both the party and the province are currently led by Premier Scott Moe. The party was established in 1997 by a coalition of former provincial Progressive Conservative and Liberal party members and supporters who sought to remove the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) from power. The Saskatchewan Party served as the province's Official Opposition until the provincial election on November 7, 2007. Eric Olauson is a former Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in the 2016 provincial election. He represented the electoral district of Saskatoon University as a member of the Saskatchewan Party until 2020. Prior to his election, he was the Ward 8 councillor on Saskatoon City Council for less than a full term. Saskatoon Sutherland was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. It was last contested in the 2011 provincial election before being dissolved into Saskatoon Silverspring-Sutherland and Saskatoon University. The district was first contested in the 1975 provincial election. In its initial form, it existed until the 1991 election, when it was merged with Saskatoon University to create the new district of Saskatoon Sutherland-University. The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. History Precursors The origins of the party began as early as 1902. In that year a group of farmers created the Territorial Grain Growers' Association. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. The name was changed to the Saskatchewan Grain Growers' Association (SGGA) when Saskatchewan became a province in 1905. Peter Prebble
Peter W. Prebble (born September 13, 1950) is a Canadian politician and environmentalist. He was an elected representative in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan for 16 years between 1978 and 2007 and has been a longtime member of the Saskatchewan Environmental Society. Early life and education Prebble was born in Essex, England, the son of Reginald Allen Prebble. In 1961, Prebble and his parents, Reg and Trudy, moved to Salmon Arm, British Columbia, where the family operated a dairy farm. They later relocated to Prince Edward Island, where they operated a motel and cottages. Prebble completed a university degree in business administration and began working as a community development worker, but ultimately followed his parents to Saskatchewan, where he pursued a graduate degree in education. 1986 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1986 Saskatchewan general election was held on October 20, 1986, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Progressive Conservative government of Premier Grant Devine was returned for a second term with a reduced majority in the legislature. While the New Democratic Party managed to increase its share of the popular vote and significantly increase its presence in the legislature, former Premier Allan Blakeney's attempt to return to power was unsuccessful. Despite winning slightly more votes than the Tories, most of the NDP margin was wasted on landslide margins in Regina and Saskatoon. While the NDP won eight seats in Regina and eight seats in Saskatoon, they only won nine seats in the rest of the province. As a result, they were consigned to Official Opposition status for another term.
