Urnula
''Urnula'' is a genus of cup fungi in the family Sarcosomataceae, circumscribed by Elias Magnus Fries in 1849. The genus contains several species found in Asia, Europe, Greenland, and North America. Sarcosomataceae fungi produce dark-colored (brown to black), shallow to deep funnel-shaped fruitbodies with or without a stipe, growing in spring. The type species of the genus is ''Urnula craterium'', commonly known as the devil's urn or the gray urn. ''Urnula'' species can grow as saprobes or parasites having an anamorphic state. The anamorphic form of ''U. craterium'' causes Strumella canker, on oak trees. Taxonomy Elias Magnus Fries circumscribed the new genus ''Urnula'' in 1849, and set what was then known as ''Peziza craterium'' as the type species. ''Sarcosoma'' is a genus of fungi in the family Sarcosomataceae. The genus, widespread in north temperate and tropical areas, contains 16 species. The anamorph (asexual) form is the genus '' Verticicladium''. Korfiella
''Korfiella'' is a fungal genus in the family Sarcosomataceae. A monotypic genus, it contains the single species ''Korfiella karnika'', found in India and described as new to science in 1970. Discovery The first scientifically documented collections of ''Korfiella karnika'' were made in November, 1965. Fruitbodies of the fungus were found growing on the rotting stump of a tree in Nainital, India. Specimens were sent to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where mycologist R.W.G. Dennis noted their similarity to '' Plectania melastoma''. After further consultation with Discomycetes authority Richard Korf, the authors Pant and Tewari erected a new genus, naming it in honour of Korf. The specific epithet ''karnika''—derived from the Sanskrit ''karna'', ("ear")—refers to the fruitbody shape. ''Pseudoplectania'' is a genus of fungi in the family Sarcosomataceae. The genus contains 12 species. '' Pseudoplectania ryvardenii'' was described in 2012, while '' Pseudoplectania carranzae'' was transferred to the genus (from ''Plectania'') in 2013. The Pezizales are an order of the subphylum Pezizomycotina within the phylum Ascomycota. The order contains 16 families, 199 genera, and 1683 species. It contains a number of species of economic importance, such as morels, the black and white truffles, and the desert truffles. The Pezizales can be saprobic, mycorrhizal, or parasitic on plants. Species grow on soil, wood, leaves and dung. Soil-inhabiting species often fruit in habitats with a high pH and low content of organic matter, including disturbed ground. ''Sarcosoma globosum'', or witches cauldron, is a species of fungus in the family Sarcosomataceae. It was first described in 1793 by Casimir Christoph Schmidel. Johann Xaver Robert Caspary transferred it to the genus '' Sarcosoma'' in 1891. Also known as the Charred-Pancake Cup, is a near-threatened fungus native to Northern Europe. It is rarely found in some parts of northeastern North America, particularly in the Great Lakes region. To biologists' surprise, in 2021 it was found in Northern British Columbia. The witches cauldron is an ascomycete or sac fungus, meaning that its microscopic structure utilizes the ascus, a spore-bearing cell, for sexual reproduction. ''Galiella'' is a genus of fungi in the family Sarcosomataceae. The genus is widely distributed in northern temperate regions, and according to one estimate, contains eight species. Taxonomy ''Galiella'' was described in 1957 by Richard Korf and John Axel Nannfeldt. In the early 1950s, French mycologist Marcelle Louise Fernande Le Gal used the generic name ''Sarcosoma'' to treat several species that she did not think belonged in the same genus as ''Sarcosoma globosum'', the type species.
