Sarath Ranawaka
Jayasiri Sarath Kumara Ranawaka (15 July 1951 – 25 July 2009) was a Member of Parliament representing Kalutara Electoral District. He was educated at Nalanda College Colombo. Ranawaka was first elected to parliament as the United National Party candidate at the 9th parliamentary election, held on 15 February 1989, for multi-member electoral district of Kalutura. He was re-elected at the 10th parliamentary election, held on 16 August 1994. He failed to get re-elected at the 11th parliamentary election, held on 10 October 2000, but was successful at the 13th parliamentary election, held on 2 April 2004, where he stood as one of the United National Front/United National Party candidates. 1994 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 16 August 1994. They marked the decisive end of seventeen years of United National Party rule and a revival of Sri Lankan democracy. Background Democracy in Sri Lanka had seemed doomed as the presidencies of J.R. Jayewardene and Ranasinghe Premadasa arbitrarily banned opposition parties, severely muzzled the media, and routinely used death squads, torture, and kidnappings in the two civil conflicts against the LTTE and JVP. The UNP had simply cancelled the 1983 parliamentary elections; its control of the media led it to victory in the 1988 and 1989 elections. The population was increasingly tired of war and repression, worn out with jingoistic Sinhalese nationalism, and wanted a return to freedom, peace, and democracy. 2004 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 2 April 2004. The ruling United National Party of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was defeated, winning only eighty two seats in the 225-member Sri Lankan parliament. The opposition United People's Freedom Alliance won 105 seats. While this was eight seats short of an absolute majority, the Alliance was able to form a government. On 6 April President Chandrika Kumaratunga commissioned Mahinda Rajapaksa, a former Labour Minister, as Prime Minister.
