Sarasota () is a city in Sarasota County on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. state of Florida. The area is renowned for its cultural and environmental amenities, beaches, resorts, and the Sarasota School of Architecture. The city is located in the southern end of the Greater Tampa Bay Area and north of Fort Myers and Punta Gorda. Its official limits include Sarasota Bay and several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Sarasota is a principal city of the Sarasota metropolitan area, and is the seat of Sarasota County. According to the 2020 U.S. census, Sarasota had a population of 54,842. The El Vernona Apartments-Broadway Apartments (also known as the Belle Haven Apartments) is a historic site in Sarasota, Florida. It is located at 1133 Fourth Street. On March 22, 1984, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This three-story, "L"-shaped plan, stucco and cast stone Mediterranean Revival building was designed by Dwight James Baum as the Broadway or El Vernona Apartments, named for Vernona Hill Freeman Burns, the wife of Owen Burns, the developer, later being known as the El Vernona Apartments-Broadway Apartments. The Sarasota Woman's Club (also known as the Florida Studio Theatre) is a historic woman's club in Sarasota, Florida. It is located at 1241 North Palm Avenue. It was founded in 1913 and on January 18, 1985, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Sarasota Times Building
The Sarasota Times Building is a historic site in Sarasota, Florida. It is located at 1214–1216 1st Street. On March 22, 1984, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The three-story asymmetrically-massed, stucco and cast stone façade, Mediterranean Revival structure was designed by architect Dwight James Baum. Sarasota High School is a public high school of the Sarasota County Public Schools in Sarasota, Florida, United States, a city on the Gulf of Mexico coast south of Tampa. The school colors are black and orange and the mascot is a sailor. History Old Sarasota High School Architecture Old Sarasota High School was designed by architect M. Leo Elliott in 1926. The school was completed in 1927 and the first senior class graduated in 1928. Made of red brick and glazed terra cotta, the Late Gothic Revival building was set on a high base of limestone and concrete laid in imitation of limestone. The Sarasota County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located in Sarasota, Florida. Designed by architect Dwight James Baum in the Mediterranean Revival style, it was built in 1926-1927 by Stevenson and Cameron, Inc. of New York. History The County Commission had plans to construct a courthouse since late 1924. Charles and Edith Ringling conveyed land to the building. In March 1925, the County Commission hired Dwight James Baum as architect for the courthouse. In September 1925, they awarded the construction contract to Stevenson and Cameron, Inc. of New York. Roth Cigar Factory
The Roth Cigar Factory is a historic site in Sarasota, Florida located at 30 Mira Mar Court. The building operated as a cigar factory for Edward and Michael Roth from 1923 to 1938. On March 22, 1984, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. History Cigar making in Sarasota began in 1911 with the founding of Sarasota Cigar Company. By 1913, a second cigar company, Roth Cigar Factory, was established in the city. The company was owned and operated by two brothers: Edward and Michael Roth. The brothers began their cigar production at a factory and newsstand located at 220 Main Street. In 1920, Edward Roth acquired land for a separate cigar factory. The building was constructed in 1922 and completed the following year—the same time as the nearby Mira Mar Apartments (DeMarcay Hotel) and Mira Mar Hotel, buildings that were all designed by Thomas Reed Martin.
