Sarahmée
Sarahmée Ouellet (born 1988), mononymously known as Sarahmée, is a Senegalese-Canadian rapper from Quebec. She is most noted for her single "T'as pas cru", which was shortlisted for the 2019 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. The sister of singer-songwriter Karim Ouellet, she released the EPs ''Retox'' in 2011 and ''Sans détour'' in 2013 before releasing her full-length debut album ''Légitime'' in 2015. She followed up with ''Irréversible'' in 2019, and received a Prix Félix nomination for Revelation of the Year at the Gala de l'ADISQ in 2019. The video for her single "Bun Dem", directed by Caraz, was also a Juno Award nominee for Video of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2020. |
SOCAN Songwriting Prize
The SOCAN Songwriting Prize, formerly known as the ECHO Songwriting Prize, is an annual competition recognizing the best in Canadian emerging music, both anglophone and francophone. Established in 2006, the competition was designed to recognize some of the most innovative, creative and artistic songs created in the year preceding the award by emerging songwriters in Canada. Songs are selected by a competition panel composed of 10 music experts from the Canadian music scene, who each nominate two songs based on a set of criteria they believe are the best songs by emerging artists from the past year. The songs are narrowed down to a set of 10 finalists and announced publicly. Fans then vote for the winner over the course of two weeks in June. Once the winners (one anglophone and one francophone) are determined after the voting period, they each are awarded a $10,000 cash prize from SOCAN and an assortment of prizes from the yearly sponsors. The Juno Awards of 2020, the 49th Juno Awards, was an awards presentation that was to be held at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 15 March 2020. The awards and associated events were cancelled due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, making it the first Juno Awards since 1988 to be cancelled. The award winners were announced on 29 June 2020 in an online event. Host city bids Saskatoon attempted to host the 2019 awards, but abandoned that bid due to lack of funding. The city's subsequent bid for 2020 was successful. The municipal government of Saskatoon had allocated $350,000 towards the event.
