Sarah Tan (sailor)
Sarah Tan (born 1 August 1980 in the United Kingdom) is a British Channel V VJ and a 987FM DJ and a Singapore resident. Her father is Chinese and her mother is English. She has two younger sisters, Kathryn and Laura. She attended an all-girls boarding school in Shropshire, England, when she was 13. Several years later she returned to Singapore to finish high school at the United World College of South East Asia. Later, she enrolled in the University of Surrey and graduated with a degree in English literature. Tan previously worked as a bartender and a shop assistant at Chanel. She began her modeling career when she was 16 with the prestigious Elite Models Singapore agency. It was through this agency that she received the coveted VJ spot on Channel V International. Soo Kui Jien (; born 31 August 1972), is a Malaysian television personality. Biography Better known as ''Handsome Jien'', Jien got his big break when he became a host on the Disney Channel in 1997. A video jockey (abbreviated VJ or sometimes veejay) is an announcer or host who introduces music videos and live performances on commercial music television channels such as MTV, VH1, MuchMusic and Channel V. Origins The term "video jockey" comes from the term "disc jockey", "DJ" ("deejay") as used in radio. Music Television (MTV) popularized the term in the 1980s (see List of MTV VJs). The MTV founders got their idea for their VJ host personalities from studying Merrill Aldighieri's club. Aldighieri worked in the New York City nightclub Hurrah, which was the first to make a video installation as a prominent featured component of the club's design with multiple monitors hanging over the bar and dance floor. When Hurrah invited Aldighieri to show her experimental film, she asked if she could develop a video to complement the DJ music so that then her film would become part of a club ambiance and not be seen as a break in the evening. Channel '' ("V" standing for the letter, not the Roman numeral "5") is a Chinese and former Asian pay television musical network originally launched by Star TV Hong Kong (now Fox Networks Group Asia Pacific). It was part of the unit of Disney International Operations, and was launched back in September 1991 to replace the first incarnation of MTV's Asian operation before it was shutdown on October 1, 2021.
