André Sapir
André Sapir is a Belgian economist and professor at the Solvay Brussels School of Economics & Management ( Université Libre de Bruxelles). He is also a senior fellow at Bruegel, the Brussels-based think tank. Professional career Sapir holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with Bela Balassa. He then was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, from 1977 to 1982, before returning to his native Brussels. From 2001 to 2004 he was economic adviser to European Commission President Romano Prodi. As such, he was the coordinator of the landmark report on Europe's growth policy known as the Sapir Report. He then served until 2009 in the group of Economic Policy Advisors to Prodi's successor José Manuel Barroso. Edward Sapir
Edward Sapir (; January 26, 1884 – February 4, 1939) was an American Jewish anthropologist-linguist, who is widely considered to be one of the most important figures in the development of the discipline of linguistics in the United States. Sapir was born in German Pomerania, in what is now northern Poland. His family emigrated to the United States of America when he was a child. He studied Germanic linguistics at Columbia, where he came under the influence of Franz Boas, who inspired him to work on Native American languages. While finishing his Ph.D. he went to California to work with Alfred Kroeber documenting the indigenous languages there. He was employed by the Geological Survey of Canada for fifteen years, where he came into his own as one of the most significant linguists in North America, the other being Leonard Bloomfield. Estelle Sapir
Estelle Sapir (25 January 1923 – 13 April 1999) was a Polish Jewish Holocaust survivor who achieved a measure of fame for her successful battle with the Swiss banking industry, in particular Credit Suisse, after a half-century of fighting for the return of her family's money, which had been deposited by her father, Józef Sapir, before he was murdered in the Nazi concentration camp at Majdanek during World War II. In 1998, Credit Suissewhich had demanded her father's death certificate, which did not exist due to the circumstances of his murder in a concentration camp, in order to release the fundsand Estelle Sapir jointly announced that the case was settled. The amount was not disclosed due to a confidentiality agreement but has been estimated at $500,000 USD. Jacques Sapir is a French economist, born in 1954 in Puteaux. He is the son of psychoanalyst Michel Sapir. Career Since 1996, he has been the director of studies at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, and head of the Centre d'Étude des Modes d'Industrialisation ( CEMI-EHESS). Pinchas Sapir ( he, פנחס ספיר, born Pinchas Kozlowski 15 October 1906 – 12 August 1975) was an Israeli politician during the first three decades following the country's founding. He held two important ministerial posts, Minister of Finance (1963–68 and 1969–74) and Minister of Trade and Industry (1955–65 and 1970–72) as well as several other high-ranking governmental posts. He is often considered to be 'the father' of the Israeli economy for his unwavering efforts to foster economic development during the country's formative years. Richard Ben Sapir (; 1936–1987) is best known for '' The Destroyer'' series of novels that he co-created with Warren Murphy. The first ''Destroyer'' was written in 1963, while Sapir worked as a city hall reporter in Jersey City and Murphy served as secretary to the city's mayor. Ahead of its time with a plot centered upon a brash young westerner trained in the martial arts by a master assassin from North Korea, the book went unpublished until June 1971 but eventually spawned a highly successful adventure series with over 30 million copies in print by the late 1990s. Prior to co-creating ''The Destroyer'', Sapir worked as an editor and in public relations. Yosef Sapir ( he, יוסף ספיר; January 27, 1902 – February 26, 1972) was an Israeli politician and Knesset member of the 1st to 7th Knessets. He served as head of the General Zionists and was a founding member of the Gahal party. Sapir was born in Jaffa in 1902, then under the Ottoman Empire. Between 1940 and 1951 he served as the mayor of Petah Tikva, where a major street (part of Road 481) is named after him. Shortly after his tenure, at the end of 1952, Sapir joined the national government as Health Minister, later going on to become the Minister of Transportation between 1952 and 1955. Sapir served as a Minister without Portfolio in Levi Eshkol's emergency government formed on the eve of the Six-Day War.
