The Saolta University Health Care Group ( ga, Grúpa Cúram Sláinte Ollscoile Saolta) is one of the hospital groups established by the Health Service Executive in Ireland. History The grouping of hospitals was announced by Ireland's then Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly, T.D., in May 2013, as part of a restructure of Irish public hospitals and a goal of delivering better patient care. The Group was given responsibility for the following hospitals: *University Hospital Galway *Letterkenny University Hospital * Mayo University Hospital *Merlin Park University Hospital *Portiuncula University Hospital * Roscommon University Hospital *Sligo University Hospital In 2014, the Group, which had initially been known as the West / North West Hospitals Group, became Saolta University Health Care Group. Health Service Executive
The Health Service Executive (HSE) ( ga, Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte) is the publicly funded healthcare system in Ireland, responsible for the provision of health and personal social services. It came into operation on 1 January 2005. The current Director-General is Stephen Mulvany on an interim basis, after Paul Reid stepped down in October 2022. The new Director General, Bernard Gloster, will take up the role in Spring 2023. History The Executive was established by the Health Act 2004 and came into official operation on 1 January 2005. James Reilly (Irish Politician)
James Reilly (born 16 August 1955) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician, businessman and medical doctor who served as a Senator from May 2016 to March 2020. He previously served as Acting Minister for Children and Youth Affairs from February to May 2016, Minister for Health from March 2011 to July 2014 and deputy leader of Fine Gael from 2010 to 2017. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin North constituency from 2007 to 2016. He subsequently announced his retirement from politics after he lost his bid for election for his old seat at the 2020 general election. Personal life Reilly graduated with a medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1979 and is a qualified General Practitioner. University Hospital Galway ( ga, Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Gaillimh) is a major acute hospital in Galway, Ireland. It is managed by Saolta University Health Care Group. History The hospital has its origins in the Galway Central Hospital which was completed in 1924. A new facility, which was designed by Thomas Joseph Cullen and built on the same site as the old hospital, opened as Galway Regional Hospital in 1956. It became University College Hospital Galway in 1993 and went on to become University Hospital Galway in 2006. Letterkenny University Hospital
Letterkenny University Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal na hOllscoile Leitir Ceanainn) is a general hospital at Letterkenny, County Donegal, in Ulster, Republic of Ireland. One of Ireland's busiest, the campus is divided by a main road heading on towards the North/West of Donegal on the N56 road (Ireland). A teaching hospital, it maintains links with NUI Galway, LYIT and the Royal College of Surgeons. LUH has been affected by the problems faced by Ireland's Health Service, extending back to the Fianna Fáil– Progressive Democrat governments of Bertie Ahern and Mary Harney to the present Fine Gael– Labour coalition. A common feature is the treatment of patients on trolleys due to chronic bed shortages. The emergency department of the hospital was closed for nine months when it was destroyed by flooding in July 2013 which caused €40 million worth of damage.
