The Santuit Historic District encompasses a cluster of historic houses around the junction of Falmouth Road ( Massachusetts Route 28) and Main Street in the Santuit village of Barnstable, Massachusetts. It includes eight houses, six of which are historically significant for their association with the Crocker family, who were the first settlers of the area in the 18th century. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The oldest house in the district is the Ebenezer Crocker House at 4698 Falmouth Road. It is a fairly typical Georgian house, five bays wide and 2-1/2 stories high, with a large central chimney. This house was supposedly dragged here c. 1739. The Alvan Crocker House at 4701 Falmouth was built c. 1769, and has some of the finest Georgian paneling, as well as surviving fragments of period wallpaper. Cahoon Museum
The Cahoon Museum of American Art is an art museum located in Cotuit, Massachusetts. It features fine art, folk art and American art from the 1800s through the present. Public programs include a series of annual changing exhibitions, tours, artist's talks and workshops, and family activities. History The Museum's Historical building was completed between 1775-1782 by Zenas Crocker. Through its years it has been used as a home, a tavern, an art studio/ gallery, and renovated back into home. It is one of six Crocker homes situated off RTE 28 in present day Cotuit,MA. The museum was founded in 1982 by Cotuit art collector, Rosemary Rapp. In 1945, artists Ralph Cahoon and Martha A Farham Cahoon bought the house, and used the lower level of their home as their gallery and studio . The Town of Barnstable ( ) is a town in the U.S. state of Massachusetts and the county seat of Barnstable County. Barnstable is the largest community, both in land area and population, on Cape Cod, and is one of thirteen Massachusetts municipalities that have been granted city forms of government by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts but wish to retain "the town of" in their official names. At the 2020 census it had a population of 48,916. The town contains several villages (one of which is also named Barnstable) within its boundaries. Massachusetts Route 28
Route 28 is a nominally south–north state highway in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, running from the town of Eastham via Boston to the New Hampshire state line in Methuen. Following the route from its nominally southern end, Route 28 initially heads south to the town of Chatham then turns west to follow along the south shore of Cape Cod. In Falmouth, Route 28 turns north and continues through the western part of Plymouth County and the eastern part of Norfolk County; it then passes through downtown Boston before heading north via Lawrence to the New Hampshire state line, where it continues as New Hampshire Route 28. Route 28 was originally formed as a New England interstate route established in 1922 to run from Buzzards Bay to New Hampshire. Roland Crocker House
Roland (; frk, *Hrōþiland; lat-med, Hruodlandus or ''Rotholandus''; it, Orlando or ''Rolando''; died 15 August 778) was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. The historical Roland was military governor of the Breton March, responsible for defending Francia's frontier against the Bretons. His only historical attestation is in Einhard's '' Vita Karoli Magni'', which notes he was part of the Frankish rearguard killed in retribution by the Basques in Iberia at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.
