Santuc, South Carolina
Santuc is an unincorporated community in Union County, South Carolina. Cane Creek Church is a historic congregation in Santuc. The Union County Dragway is outside of Santuc. It has had a volunteer fire department for decades since its formation on August 5, 1968. Dan Jenkins, a 24-year-old construction gang laborer, was lynched and shot hundreds of times on June 17, 1930 in Santuc. He had been accused of an attempted assault on two sisters. The National Guard arrived twenty minutes after the lynching. The community is noted in a comptroller's document from 1900. Mansions were built in the area of Santuc and Fish Dam. In 1933, Santuc was described as "a crossroads trading center with scarcely a dozen houses in it, a railroad depot, three stores, and two filling stations." A former slave, Eison Lyles, who was born in Santuc, was interviewed as part of a Works Project Administration effort. Union County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 27,244. Its county seat is Union. The county was created in 1785. Union County is coterminous with the Union, SC, Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson, SC Combined Statistical Area. Thomas Bothwell Jeter
Thomas Bothwell Jeter (October 13, 1827May 20, 1883) was the 79th Governor of South Carolina from September 1, 1880 to November 30, 1880. His home in Union, South Carolina is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Born in Santuc, South Carolina, five miles north of Carlisle in Union County, Jeter attended and graduated from South Carolina College in 1846. He was admitted to the bar 1848 and practiced law in the Upstate while concurrently holding the position of president of the Spartanburg and Union Railroad. Additionally during antebellum, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1856. With the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Jeter volunteered for service in the Confederate Army and was made a captain of infantry. After the war, Jeter resumed his law practice and was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1872 after becoming disenchanted by Radical Republican rule of the state during Reconstruction. Wallace Leo Jenkins
Lt. Wallace Leo Jenkins (1896–1941) was an American law enforcement officer. He was a pioneer in the use of technology and science in South Carolina law enforcement. Jenkins served with the South Carolina Highway Patrol from its creation in 1930 until his death in 1941. He created and led the Identification Bureau, a unit that evolved into a team of skilled investigators who used technology to fight crime. The ID Bureau later merged with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and became the foundation for SLED’s Criminal Justice Information Services and Forensics Services units. Early life Jenkins was born in Santuc, South Carolina, on February 18, 1896. As a young man he worked as a mechanic for the Overland Automobile Company in Spartanburg.
