Santi Niccolo E Lucia, Siena
Santi Niccolò e Lucia, also known only as Santa Lucia, is a Roman Catholic church located in Pian dei Mantellini, in the city of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. History A parish church dedicated to the two saints, Niccolò and Lucia, was present at the site for centuries when it was rebuilt in the late 16th and early 17th century. The ceilings and vaults of the church were frescoed by Sebastiano Folli with the ''Glory of Santa Lucia'' (1612) and ''Glory of St John the Evangelist'' (1621). The main altarpiece depicts the ''Martyrdom of St Lucy'' (1606) painted by Francesco Vanni. Flanking the altar are polychrome wooden statues from the Quattrocento depicting the titular saints. The Lucy is attributed to Giacomo Cozzarelli, while the Niccolo is from the school of Giovanni di Stefano. On the left wall, is a ''Crucifixion'' by the son of Ventura Salimbeni, Simondio Salimbeni. Sebastiano Folli
Sebastiano Folli (1568–1621) was an Italian painter of the late Renaissance period. He was a scholar of Alessandro Casolano, and a native of Siena. He distinguished himself by several frescoes in the churches at Siena, particularly the cupola of Santa Marta, and some subjects from the ''Life of St. Sebastian,'' in the church of that saint, painted in competition with Rutilio Manetti, to whose pictures they are in no way inferior. He visited Rome, and was employed in some considerable works for the Cardinal de' Medici, afterwards Leo XI. He died in 1621. Giovanni Di Stefano (sculptor)
Giovanni di Stefano (1443 – c. 1506) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, bronze-caster, and engineer. Baptized on 20 June 1443, he was the son of Stefano di Giovanni. Some of his surviving works include two angels in bronze at Siena Cathedral, which he created in 1489 in collaboration with Francesco di Giorgio (who also worked with Giacomo Cozzarelli on another pair of bronze angels in the same cathedral), the marble altar of St. Caterina's chapel in S. Domenico, Siena (1469), and the effigy of Cardinal Pietro Foscari in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome (previously thought to have been created by Vecchietta), which he created circa 1485. Ventura Salimbeni
Ventura di Archangelo Salimbeni (also later called Bevilacqua; 20 January 1568 – 1613) was an Italian Counter-Maniera painter and printmaker highly influenced by the ''vaghezza'' and sensual reform of Federico Barocci. Biography Salimbeni was born in Siena. He studied painting, together with his half-brother Francesco Vanni, under their father Arcangelo Salimbeni in his native Siena, He possibly spent some time, in Northern Italy and then moved to Rome in 1588 to work, together with others, on the fresco painting of the Vatican Library under pope Sixtus V. During 1590-1591, he received a commission from Cardinal Bonifazio Bevilacqua Aldobrandini for paintings in the Roman Jesuit Church of the Gesù and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Simone Martini
Simone Martini ( – 1344) was an Italian painter born in Siena. He was a major figure in the development of early Italian painting and greatly influenced the development of the International Gothic style. It is thought that Martini was a pupil of Duccio di Buoninsegna, the leading Sienese painter of his time. According to late Renaissance art biographer Giorgio Vasari, Simone was instead a pupil of Giotto di Bondone, with whom he went to Rome to paint at the Old St. Peter's Basilica, Giotto also executing a mosaic there. Martini's brother-in-law was the artist Lippo Memmi. Very little documentation of Simone's life survives, and many attributions are debated by art historians. According to E. H.
