Santi Gervasio E Protasio, Sondrio
Santi Gervasio e Protasio is a Roman Catholic collegiate church located on in the town of Sondrio in the province of the same name, region of Lombardy, Italy. History A church is documented since the 12th century, and still retains a facade facing west. The interior has a single nave with a peaked wooden roof. The church houses paintings depicting a ''Miracle of St Gregory the Great'', a ''Virgin of the Rosary'', and an ''Adoration of the Holy Sacrament by Saints Gervasio and Protasio'' by Pietro Ligari. Other works in the church include a ''Glory of St Joseph'' by Giuseppe Antonio Petrini and paintings depicting the ''Martyrdom of Sts Gervasio and Protasio'' and the ''Transport of their relics'' by Giacomo Parravicini, also called il Gianolo. Pietro Ligari
Giovanni Pietro Ligario (1686–1748) was an Italian painter and architect of the late-Baroque. He was born at Ardenno province of Sondrio in the Valtelline valley, and after early training there, moved to Rome, where he frequented the studio of Lazzaro Baldi, and afterwards visited Venice. On his return to his native town in 1727, he was employed in painting historical pictures for churches and private collections. He died at Sondrio. Giuseppe Antonio Petrini
Giuseppe Antonio Petrini (October 23, 1677- c. 1755–9) was a painter of the late-Baroque, active mainly in Lugano, present-day Switzerland. While born in Carona in Canton Ticino and died in Lugano, both in Switzerland, Petrini belongs to the Northern Italian or Lombard heritage of baroque painting. He possibly apprenticed with Bartolomeo Guidobono after 1700. While some works can be found in Como and Bergamo, most are located in Lugano and the surrounding area. He is also listed between 1711 and 1753 as ''fabbriciere'' of the church of Madonna d’Onegro in Carona. He often painted "portraits" of historical figures including saints, philosophers, and scientists for patrons. Giacomo Parravicini or Paravicini, also referred to as ''il Gianolo'' (5 June 1660 – 28 February 1729) was an Italian painter, active mainly in Milan and the Valtellina. Biography He was born in Caspano, a neighborhood of Civo, in the province of Sondrio, in north Lombardy. He may have journeyed to Rome to study with Carlo Maratta, or more likely was influenced by Maratta's large school of pupils, including Giorgio Bonola, who worked together with Parravicini in painting for the church of Sant'Alessandro in Zebedia in Milan. Between 1687 and 1688, he painted for the choir and chapel of the archbishop's chapel in Caspano. Antonio Caimi (16 April 1814 – 5 January 1878) was an Italian painter and biographer of artists, active in Milan and best known for his portraits. Biography He was born at Sondrio. He trained initially in the Accademia Carrara of Bergamo under Diotti, but then moved to study in the Brera Academy under Sabatelli. Nicolò Rusca
Nicolò Rusca (20 April 1563 – 24 July 1618) was an Italian priest who served in the Diocese of Como. Rusca was arrested under false pretenses and was killed through the use of torture in 1618. He was recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as a martyr and was beatified in 2013. Biography Rusca was born in 1563 to a family that belong to an ancient and noble house, the House of Rusconi. He was born to Giovanni Antonio and Daria. His siblings were Bartolomeo, Christopher and Daisy. He commenced his theological studies in Milan from 1580 to 1587. Ordained to the priesthood in 1587 at the end of his time of study, he was appointed as the Archpriest of Sondrio. This was an appointment he was kept in until his death. Giovanni Gavazzeni (13 September 1841 – 29 November 1907) was an Italian painter of portraits and sacred subjects. He was born in Talamona in the Valtellina. Giovanni studied at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo under Enrico Scuri. He painted a ''Virgin Mary with Souls in Heaven'' for the chapel in the cemetery of Delebio, as well as devotional frescoes on the walls of houses.
