Santahar–Kaunia Line
The Santahar–Kaunia line is a dual-gauge railway line connecting Santahar and Kaunia in Bangladesh, under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway. From 1878 to 2010 it was a single line of metre gauge . Between 2010 and 2013, Bangladesh Railway converted the track to also include a line, with help of Indian Railways. History The Brahmaputra–Sultanpur Railway Company constructed the metre-gauge railway track from Santahar to Fulchhari (Tistamukh) in 1899–1900. Presently the line is up to Balashi Ghat in Phulchhari Upazila. The Bonarpara–Kaunia line was constructed in 1905. Assam Mail The prestigious Assam Mail originally ran along this track in the British days from Santahar to Amingaon. Ferry In Bangladesh, ferries are often an integrated part of the railway system. Santahar
Santahar ( bn, সান্তাহার) is a railway junction in Adamdighi Upazila in Bogra District of Rajshahi Division in Bangladesh. History From 1878, the railway route from Kolkata, then called Calcutta, to Siliguri was in two laps. The first lap was a 185 km journey along the Eastern Bengal State Railway from Calcutta Station (later renamed Sealdah) to Damookdeah Ghat on the southern bank of the Padma River, then across the river in a ferry and the second lap of the journey. A metre gauge line of the North Bengal Railway linked Saraghat on the northern bank of the Padma to Siliguri. It was during this period that Santahar came up as a railway station. Kaunia ( bn, কাউনিয়া) is an upazila of Rangpur District in the Division of Rangpur, Bangladesh. Geography Kaunia is located at . It has 35487 households and total area 147.6 km2. Metre-gauge railways are narrow-gauge railways with track gauge of or 1 metre. The metre gauge is used in around of tracks around the world. It was used by European colonial powers, such as the French, British and German Empires. In Europe, large metre-gauge networks remain in use in Switzerland, Spain and many European towns with urban trams, but most metre-gauge local railways in France, Germany and Belgium closed down in the mid-20th century, although many still remain. Asiatic Society Of Bangladesh
The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh is a non political and non profit research organisation registered under both Society Act of 1864 and NGO Bureau, Government of Bangladesh. The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh was established as the Asiatic Society of East Pakistan in Dhaka in 1952 by a number of Muslim leaders, and renamed in 1972. Assam Mail
The Assam Mail was one of the better known metre-gauge trains in the Indian Railways system that was there from the pre-independence days. The train was discontinued in 1986 with the completion of the broad-gauge conversion of the metre-gauge line to Dibrugarh. 3 Up/ 4 Dn Popularly known as 3 Up/ 4 Dn (Kalka Mail was 1 Up/ 2 Dn), it originally ran in the pre-independence days from , now in Bangladesh, to Guwahati.
