Santa Rosa Plaza is one of two enclosed shopping malls in Santa Rosa, California. Opened in 1983, it is anchored by Macy's and Forever 21. The mall is managed by Simon Property Group. History The mall was built in downtown Santa Rosa in 1983 with Macy's, Sears, and Mervyn's as the original anchors, following the demolition of various downtown buildings as part of Santa Rosa's urban renewal project, including the landmark 1923 California Theater. Macy's, the first store in the development, opened in 1981 on the site of the former theater. Development was delayed for many years due to legal disputes between developers Ernest Hahn and Hugh Codding, the latter of whom owned nearby Coddingtown Mall. Codding lost the settlement. In an interview with Gaye LeBaron, Hugh Codding said the construction bonds for the Santa Rosa Plaza were paid in full with property tax revenues from the plaza businesses. The Hahn Company, San Diego, California, alternately known as Ernest W. Hahn, Inc., was a major American shopping center owner and developer from the 1950s to the 1980s. Purchased by the Trizec Corp. in 1980 (which then took the name TrizecHahn), it became defunct. Corporate history The company was founded and managed by Ernest W. Hahn (1919–1992). Mervyn's was an American middle-scale department store chain based in Hayward, California, and founded by Mervin G. Morris (1920–2021). It carried national brands of clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, electronics, and housewares. Many of the company's stores were opened in shopping malls; however, some locations were operated independently. Based on 2005 revenue, Mervyn's was the 83rd largest retailer in the United States. In 2006, Mervyn's had 189 stores in 10 states. One year later, Mervyn's had reduced its store count to 177 stores in seven states. Coddingtown Mall is one of two enclosed shopping malls in Santa Rosa, California. Opened in 1962, the mall is anchored by JCPenney, Macy's, Nordstrom Rack, Target, and Whole Foods Market. It is fully owned and operated by Codding Enterprises. History Founding Coddingtown Mall was built in 1962 by Hugh Codding. Originally an open-air mall, it was enclosed in 1979. The expansion also added Liberty House, which was converted to Macy's in 1984. In 1996, Macy's moved to a spot previously occupied by The Emporium. As a result, Gottschalks moved into the former Liberty House/Macy's building. Codding sold a 50% share of the mall to Simon Property Group in 2005. After the sale to Simon, many merchants criticized Simon for failing to bring chain stores to the mall. Gaye Theresa LeBaron (born 1935) is an American newspaper columnist, author, teacher, and local historian of Sonoma County, California. She wrote more than 8,000 columns for ''The Press Democrat'' from 1961 until her semi-retirement in 2001. She also co-authored two books on the history of Santa Rosa, California.
