According to the ''Organic Law of Regional Governments'', the regions ( es, regiones) are, with the departments, the first-level administrative subdivisions of Peru. Since its Peruvian War of Independence, 1821 independence, Peru had been divided into departments of Peru, departments () but faced the problem of increasing centralization of political and economic power in its capital, Lima. After several unsuccessful regionalization attempts, the national government decided to temporarily provide the departments (including the Constitutional Province of Callao) with regional governments until the conformation of regions according to the ''Organic Law of Regional Governments'' which says that two or more departments should merge to conform a region. Amazonas Region
Amazonas () is a department and region in northern Peru bordered by Ecuador on the north and west, Cajamarca on the west, La Libertad on the south, and Loreto and San Martín on the east. Its capital is the city of Chachapoyas. With a landscape of steep river gorges and mountains, Amazonas is the location of Kuelap, a huge stone fortress enclosing more than 400 stone structures; it was built on a mountain about 3,000 meters high, starting about 500 AD and was occupied to the mid-16th century. They are subdivisions of the provinces of Peru, provinces, which in turn are subdivisions of the larger regions of Peru, regions or departments. There are 1,838 districts in total. Nieva River
The Nieva River is a tributary of the Marañón River in Peru. It flows through the provinces Bongara and Condorcanqui of the Amazonas Region.
