The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore ( it, Duomo di Mirandola; Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, Mirandola) is a Gothic Roman Catholic church in the center of the town of Mirandola, province of Modena, Region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. History The present church was rebuilt in the 1400s by Giovanni and Francesco Pico, the then lords of Mirandola. The apse and side walls were built at that time in the Gothic style, whereas the present Gothic façade is a recent restoration. The bell-tower towards the rear of the church is from the 17th century. The interior houses paintings by Sante Peranda Sante Peranda (1566–1638) was an Italian painter of the late-Renaissance period. Gothic architecture (or pointed architecture) is an architectural style that was prevalent in Europe from the late 12th to the 16th century, during the High and Late Middle Ages, surviving into the 17th and 18th centuries in some areas. Mirandola
Mirandola ( Mirandolese: ) is a city and ''comune'' of Emilia-Romagna, Italy, in the Province of Modena, northeast of the provincial capital by railway. History Mirandola originated as a Renaissance city-fortress. For four centuries it was the seat of an independent principality (first a county, then a duchy), a possession of the Pico family, whose most outstanding member was the polymath Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463–94). It was besieged two times: in 1510 by Pope Julius II and in 1551 by Pope Julius III. It was acquired by the Duchy of Modena in 1710. The city started to decay after the castle of Mirandola was partially destroyed in 1714. On 29 May 2012, a powerful earthquake hit the Mirandola area. It killed at least 17 people and collapsed churches and factories. Also 200 were injured. The 5.8 magnitude quake left 14,000 people homeless. The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. 2012 Emilia Earthquakes
In May 2012, two major earthquakes struck Northern Italy, causing 27 deaths and widespread damage. The events are known in Italy as the 2012 Emilia earthquakes, because they mainly affected the Emilia region. The first earthquake, registering magnitude 6.1, struck in the Emilia-Romagna region, about north of the city of Bologna, on at 04:03 local time (02:03 UTC). The epicentre was between Finale Emilia, Bondeno and Sermide.
