Santa Maria Dell'Itria, Barrafranca
The church of Maria Santissima dell'Itria is a Roman Catholic parish church in the town of Barrafranca, in the province of Enna, region of Sicily, Italy. History and Description A church at this site dates to circa 1598. Atop the facade are three arches that form a sail-like campanile. The church has a rich stucco decoration in the interior by Giuseppe Fantauzzo. He also created the bas-reliefs depicting the Madonnas of the Annunciation, Assumption, and Itria, as well as a St Francis of Paola and a Madonna of the Sacred Heart. Mattia Preti
Mattia Preti (24 February 1613 – 3 January 1699) was an Italian Baroque artist who worked in Italy and Malta. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Saint John. Life Born in the small town of Taverna in Calabria, Preti was called ''Il Cavalier Calabrese'' (the Calabrian Knight) after appointment as a Knight of the Order of St. John (Knights of Malta) in 1660. His early apprenticeship is said to have been with the " Caravaggist" Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, which may account for his lifelong interest in the style of Caravaggio. Probably before 1630, Preti joined his brother Gregorio (also a painter), in Rome, where he became familiar with the techniques of Caravaggio and his school as well as with the work of Guercino, Rubens, Guido Reni, and Giovanni Lanfranco. In Rome, he painted fresco cycles in the churches of Sant'Andrea della Valle and San Carlo ai Catinari. Francesco Vaccaro (painter)
Francesco Vaccaro also known as Vaccari, Vacari (24 September 1636 – 13 December 1675) was an Italian painter and engraver of the Baroque period, who trained in his native Bologna under Francesco Albani . He was chiefly known as a painter, from his landscape and architectural views. He published a treatise entitled ''Views and Perspectives of Ruins, Fountains and Buildings of Italy'', embellished with twelve copper plates. Two copies of this treatise are kept at the Repossi Art Gallery in Chiari, in the province of Brescia, while four others are in the British Museum, London.
