Santa Maria Dei Miracoli, Naples
Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a basilica church located in the largo dei Miracoli, near Via Foria in the city center of Naples, Italy. The neighborhood is named that of ''Miracoli'' or Miracles. History The construction of the church was started in the 17th century in a zone near the northern limits; in the same period a convent of the same name was built and assigned to the Reformed Conventuals of St Lawrence (padri Rifornati Conventuali di San Lorenzo). In 1660 the complex came under the jurisdiction of the aristocratic association of Pio Monte della Misericordia, and later of a nunnery allied with the Franciscan Order. A restoration led by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, who availed himself of the collaboration of Cosimo Fanzago and Domenico Tango. The monastery, after the 19th-century Risorgimento, was named after Princess Maria Clotilde of Savoy, and became a school. The facade was reconstructed in 1790 by Camillo Leonti. Pio Monte Della Misericordia
The Pio Monte della Misericordia is a church in the historic center of Naples, southern Italy. It is famous for its art works, including Caravaggio's '' The Seven Works of Mercy''. A charity brotherhood (''Pio Monte della Misericordia'' meaning "Pious Mount of Mercy" in Italian) was founded in August 1601 by seven young nobles, who met every Friday at the Hospital for Incurables and ministered to the sick. In 1602 they established an institution and commissioned a small church, built by Gian Giacomo di Conforto, near the staircase leading to the Cathedral, on the corner of the Via dei Tribunali and the Vico dei Zuroli. In 1605, they received an apostolic letter from Pope Paul V, according special privileges to the high altar. The church was consecrated in September 1606. Francesco Antonio Picchiatti
Francesco Antonio Picchiatti (10 January 1619, Ferrara – 28 August 1694, Naples) was an Italian architect of the Baroque period active in Naples. He is also called Picchetto. He was son of Bartolommeo Picchiatti, who also served as an architect in Naples. Biography Francesco Antonio lived nearly all his life in Naples and worked for various Spanish viceroys. He worked under Pedro Antonio de Aragón and was held in high esteem by the Marquis of Carpio, Don Gaspar de Haro, who was viceroy in Naples from 1683 to 1687. Francesco Antonio served this Marquis as an antiquarian and collector. Francesco Antonio worked on a number of projects in Naples. He aided in the reconstruction of the church of San Agostino near the Royal Mint, the church of the Divino Amore, the church and Monastery of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and that of San Girolamo delle Monache, as well as Palazzo Cellamare. Cosimo Fanzago
Cosimo Fanzago (Clusone, 12 October 1591 – Napoli, 13 February 1678) was an Italian architect and sculptor, generally considered the greatest such artist of the Baroque period in Naples, Italy. Facade Santa Maria della Sapienza. Biography Fanzago was born in Clusone (current Province of Bergamo) in a family of bronze-casters and architects. In 1608, after a short stay in Chieti, he moved to Naples. Here (according to what he wrote in 1612) he trained as a marble sculptor (''maestro di scultura di marmo'') and mason under the Tuscan sculptor Angelo Landi. His first important work was the sepulchre monument of Mario Carafa, a relative of Cardinal Carafa. His architectural debut was the design of San Giuseppe dei Vecchi a San Potito (completed 1669).
