Sant'Antonio Abate is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic church located on Via Bella at Piazzetta don Galliano, in Acqui Terme, Province of Alessandria, region of Piedmont, Italy. History The church was commissioned in 1608 by the Barnabite order, and dedicated to Saint Paul and allied to the local convent of the same name. It was rebuilt in 1701. In 1812, the church was conferred to the custody of the Confraternity of San'Antonio. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. Acqui Terme (; pms, Àich ) is a city and ''comune'' in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont, northern Italy. It is about south-southwest of Alessandria. It is one of the principal winemaking communes of the Italian DOCG wine Brachetto d'Acqui. The city's hot sulphur springs have been famous since this was the Roman town of ''Aquae Statiellae''; the ancient baths are referred to by Paulus Diaconus and the chronicler Liutprand of Cremona.
