Sannantha Bidwillii
''Sannantha bidwillii'' is a species in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. It is endemic to Queensland in Australia. The species was first formally described in 1997 and given the name ''Babingtonia bidwillii''. In 2007 it was placed in the newly created genus ''Sannantha''. For many years the name ''Baeckea virgata'' was misapplied to this species. ''Baeckea virgata'', currently ''Sannantha virgata'', is endemic to New Caledonia. Myrtaceae, the myrtle family, is a family of dicotyledonous plants placed within the order Myrtales. Myrtle, pōhutukawa, bay rum tree, clove, guava, acca (feijoa), allspice, and eucalyptus are some notable members of this group. All species are woody, contain essential oils, and have flower parts in multiples of four or five. The leaves are evergreen, alternate to mostly opposite, simple, and usually entire (i.e., without a toothed margin). The flowers have a base number of five petals, though in several genera, the petals are minute or absent. The stamens are usually very conspicuous, brightly coloured, and numerous. ''Sannantha'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Myrtaceae that are native to Australia and New Caledonia. Plants in the genus ''Sannantha'' are shrubs or trees with leaves arranged in opposite pairs, flowers usually arranged in small groups, the peduncles often 1.5–2 times as long as the pedicels and with seven to fourteen stamens. The fruit is a thin-walled capsule containing flattened, D-shaped seeds. Some species of ''Sannantha'' were previously included in the genus ''Babingtonia''. History Originally the brainchild of Nancy Tyson Burbidge, it began as a four-volume printed work consisting of 3,055 pages, and containing over 60,000 plant names. ''Sannantha virgata'' is a flowering shrub species in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. It is endemic to New Caledonia. Plants grow to between 0.5 and 3 metres high. White flowers appear in spring or summer with 5 rounded petals surrounding 7 to 10 stamens. The fruits are 1–2 mm wide and 2–3 mm in length. Taxonomy The species was first formally described in 1775 as ''Leptospermum virgatum''. In 1810 it was placed in the genus ''Baeckea''. By 1997 an Australian ''Baeckea virgata'' species complex had been identified which was regarded as separate from the New Caledonian population. From this complex, 8 separate species were identified and placed in the genus ''Babingtonia''.
