Yangzhong
Yangzhong () is a county-level city under the administration of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province, China. It is the easternmost county-level division of Zhenjiang City. History There were only several smaller shoals in the area of present-day Yangzhong during the Eastern Jin. As time went on, they enlarged and merged into an elongated shoal by Tang dynasty, which was called Xiaozhou (; literally: "Small shoal") in Song dynasty. It was renamed Xinzhou () and then Ximinzhou () during Ming dynasty, and was designated Taipingzhou () in Qing dynasty. In 1904, the imperial court decided to establish a subprefecture named after Taiping. In 1911, it was promoted to a county. Since there is a namesake in Anhui. Sanmao () is a manhua character created by Zhang Leping in 1935. He is one of the world's longest running cartoon characters and remains a landmark as one of the most famous and beloved fictional characters in China today. The name Sanmao means "three hairs" in Chinese or "three mao" (a reference to his poverty). While the character has undergone a number of transitions over time, he has always been drawn with the trademark three strands of hair, which implies malnutrition as a result of poverty. History Most Chinese comic books prior to Sanmao featured adults and the Sanmao stories were also unusual in that they lacked dialogue and could therefore be classified as pantomime comics. When Zhang Leping created the manhua comic series, his main goal was to dramatize the confusion brought about to society by the Second Sino-Japanese War. Sanmao () was the pen name of Echo Chen Ping (born Chen Mao-ping; 26 March 1943 – 4 January 1991), a Chinese-born Taiwanese writer and translator. Her works range from autobiographical writing, travel writing and reflective novels, to translations of Spanish-language comic strips. She studied philosophy and taught German before becoming a career writer. Her pen name was adopted from the main character of Zhang Leping's most famous work, ''Sanmao''. In English, she was also known as Echo or Echo Chan, the first name she used in Latin script, after the eponymous Greek nymph. Since childhood, she was said to have avoided writing the character "Mao" (懋) as it was too complex; later in life, she legally changed her name to Chen Ping.
