Sandgate is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located from Newcastle's central business district. It is part of the City of Newcastle local government area. It has a railway station on the Hunter Line. Within the suburb is the largest cemetery in Newcastle, Sandgate Cemetery, which includes the now-derelict rail-head station, formerly used by funeral trains from Honeysuckle near Newcastle. Honeysuckle is a near completed 50 hectare residential and commercial urban renewal redevelopment of former industrial land along Newcastle Harbour in New South Wales, Australia. History Honeysuckle was finally established in 1844 as a public/private partnership between the Government of New South Wales, represented by the Honeysuckle Development Corporation, and private developers. The partnership was granted responsibility for the commercial and residential renewal of derelict industrial land along the Newcastle railway line and waterfront. Available land was divided into seven precincts: Carrington, Cottage Creek, Honeysuckle, Hunter Street, Linwood, Marina and Wickham. Sandgate Cemetery
Sandgate Cemetery is a necropolis in the Hunter region near Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, and has been continuously operating since 1881. The cemetery caters for all religious, ethnic and cultural requirements. History Sandgate Cemetery was opened in 1881 and has serviced the burial needs of Newcastle since that time. It is situated on Crown Land within the suburb of Sandgate, New South Wales. The cemetery is managed by a not for profit community organisation, Northern Cemeteries, through a Board of Trustees. To service the new cemetery, a special Mortuary Station was built in Newcastle. Special trams conveyed funerals from the suburbs to the Mortuary Station then onward to a purpose built platform within the cemetery. The Hunter Line is a commuter train line operated by NSW TrainLink, running from Newcastle to Dungog and Scone in the New South Wales Hunter Region. It operates on the Newcastle, Main North and North Coast lines. Description of Route Hunter Line services operate from Newcastle on the Newcastle branch line to Islington Junction, the Main North line between Islington Junction and Scone, the North Coast line between Maitland and Dungog. The Hunter Line shares its portion of the Main North Line and North Coast Line with NSW TrainLink North Western and North Coast regional services respectively. Sandgate railway station is located on the Main Northern railway line, Main Northern line in New South Wales, Australia.
