Sanders Creek (Red River Tributary)
Sanders Creek is a Texas Parks and Wildlife Departmen accessed July 26, 2011 waterway in Lamar County, Texas, United States, near Paris, Texas. It is a tributary of the Red River. It is the primary inflow of Pat Mayse Lake. It contains several species of catfish and gar, largemouth bass, carp, bowfin, buffalo, pickerel and various other local species of freshwater fish. It is also the primary outflow (locally termed spillway) of Pat Mayse Lake. The outflow section of the creek contains species of fish such as gar, buffalo, catfish, paddlefish, striped bass, which make their way to this point via the Red River, and several other species of local freshwater fish. Sanders Creek is also one of only two creeks in Texas which contains the Ouachita rock pocketbook, a federally endangered freshwater mussel. Lamar County, Texas
Lamar County () is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas, in the Northeast Texas region. As of the 2020 census, its population was 50,088. Its county seat is Paris. The county was formed by the Congress of the Republic of Texas on December 17, 1840, and organized the next year. It is named for Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas. Lamar County comprises the Paris, TX micropolitan statistical area. American Pickerel
The American pickerels are two subspecies of ''Esox americanus'', a medium-sized species of North American freshwater predatory fish belonging to the pike family (genus ''Esox'' in family Esocidae of order Esociformes): * Redfin pickerel, sometimes called the brook pickerel, ''E. americanus americanus'' Gmelin, 1789; * Grass pickerel, ''E. americanus vermiculatus'' Lesueur, 1846. Paddlefish
Paddlefish (family Polyodontidae) are a family of ray-finned fish belonging to order Acipenseriformes, and one of two living groups of the order alongside sturgeons (Acipenseridae). They are distinguished from other fish by their titular elonglated rostrums, which are thought to enhance electroreception to detect prey. Paddlefish have been referred to as "primitive fish" because Acipenseriformes are amongst the earliest diverging lineages of ray-finned fish, having diverged from all other living groups over 300 million years ago. Buffalo Fish
''Ictiobus'', also known as buffalofish or simply buffalo, is a genus of freshwater fish native to North America, specifically the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Guatemala. Bowfin
The bowfin (''Amia calva'') is a bony fish, native to North America. Common names include mudfish, mud pike, dogfish, grindle, grinnel, swamp trout, and choupique. It is regarded as a relict, being the sole surviving species of the Halecomorphi, a group of fish that first appeared during the Early Triassic, around 250 million years ago.
