Sandakan Heritage Trails
Sandakan Heritage Trail ( ms, Jejak Warisan Sandakan) is a trail connecting several historical sites in Sandakan, a town in the east Malaysian state of Sabah. It is marked with white concrete tiles placed on the ground showing a red footprint the words "Heritage Trail" in either black or gold. History Sandakan was almost completely destroyed during Second World War. The few remaining historical relics of the former North Borneo capital was combined into a historical trails in 2003 as Sandakan Heritage Trail (SHT). Sandakan (, Jawi: , ) formerly known at various times as Elopura, is the capital of the Sandakan District in Sabah, Malaysia. It is the second largest city in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. It is located on the Sandakan Peninsula and east coast of the state in the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. In 2010, the city had an estimated population of 157,330 while the overall municipal area had a total population of 396,290. Sandakan Municipal Council
Sandakan Municipal Council ( ms, Majlis Perbandaran Sandakan, abbreviated MPS; zh, 山打根市政委员会) is the municipal council which administrates the city and municipalities area of Sandakan in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. History The municipal council is formed in 1982 following the merged between Sandakan Town Board and Rural District Council on 1 January 1982. The title of "Commissioner" was subsequently replaced with "President" while "Employee" becomes "Secretary". On 1 January 1984, Sandakan District Office was abolished by the state government with some of their previous duties and responsibilities were taken over by the municipal council and the former district officer became deputy president of the council. Sandakan Heritage Museum ( ms, Muzium Warisan Sandakan) is a museum located at the 1st floor of Wisma Warisan building in Sandakan of Sabah, Malaysia. The museum building is located next to the Sandakan Municipal Council and is part of the Sandakan Heritage Trail. Features The museum sits in the 1st floor of the former British administration building for Sandakan where it showcases the pre-war and post-war history of the town. Various artefacts including barter trade items, authentic office equipment in the 1920s and traditional agricultural equipment. Portraits of local leaders and early scenes of the town are prominently displayed with the most eye-catching is the large wall mural of Sandakan in 1935 in the museum's hallway. Sam Sing Kung Temple
Sam Sing Kung Temple ( zh, 三聖宮) (also known as the Three Saints Temple) is a Chinese temple in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. Built in 1887, the temple is the third oldest temple in Sandakan, after Goddess of Mercy Temple and Tam Kung Temple. It is part of the Sandakan Heritage Trail. History The temple was built in 1887, and has undergone several recent renovations. The temple was originally established as a religious centre for Chinese migrants who had arrived from Guangdong, Qing Dynasty. It was built by Chinese communities of Cantonese, Teochew, Hakkas and the Hainanese people. Agnes Keith House
Agnes Keith House (formerly known as the Newlands) ( ms, Rumah Agnes Keith) is a historic house museum in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. The museum is named after Agnes Newton Keith, an American author known for her three autobiographical accounts of life in British North Borneo. History A house is already constructed on a hill in the current site of the house as a British colonial government quarters. In 1934, Agnes married Harry Keith, a British official assigned for forest conservation in Sandakan. Harry has provide a house for them and living there together for years but since it has been destroyed through war both choose not to rebuild their house in the former location. After the World War II, the new house was rebuilt between 1946 until 1947 on the hill of a destroyed house and became the first government permanent timber dwelling. The Sandakan War Monument ( ms, Tugu Peringatan Perang Sandakan) is a monument established by the British located in the town of Sandakan, Malaysia, to commemorates the town citizens who died during the Second World War. Chartered Company Monument
The Chartered Company Monument ( ms, Tugu Syarikat Berkanun) is a monument in the town of Sandakan in Sabah, Malaysia dedicated to the British servicemen or employees who were killed at the end of the 19th century. The monument was built by the British North Borneo Company and part of the Sandakan Heritage Trails, a trail which connects the historic sights of Sandakan. History To commemorate the death of a British explorer in March 1883, Frank Hatton who died during his expedition to Segama River, the North Borneo Chartered Company announced the establishment of a memorial briefly after his death. The Sandakan Jamek Mosque ( ms, Masjid Jamek Sandakan or also known as Masjid Jamek Sheik Hasabollah At-Tohiri) is a mosque in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. Opened in 1890, it is the oldest mosque in Sandakan, part of Sandakan Heritage Trail. History The mosque was opened in 1890 by Damsah, a Muslim cloth merchant from British Raj (present-day India). During World War II, the mosque become a hiding places for the town Muslim populations from the Japanese. The Japanese military believes the mosque could also become the hiding place for British soldiers that leading them to shot the mosque several times during the war.
