Sanabria (comarca)
Sanabria (, ''A Seabra'' in the Galician language, ''Senabria'' in Leonese language) is a ''comarca'' in the northwest of the province of Zamora, western Spain. It borders Portugal to the south, Orense to the west and León to the north. It belongs to the Autonomous Region of Castilla y León. Overview The Sierra de la Cabrera Baja forms a natural boundary with Leon Province in the north, Sierra Segundera with Galicia in the west, and Sierra de la Culebra and Sierra de la Gamoneda with the Bragança District of Portugal in the south and southwest. The comarcas of La Carballeda and Tierra del Pan are to the east. The most famous place in the comarca is the Sanabria Lake (''Lago de Sanabria''), the biggest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula, with a surface of which is now within the limits of the Sanabria Lake Natural Park. Comarca De Sanabria (Provincia De Zamora, España)
A ''comarca'' (, or , or ) is a traditional region or local administrative division found in Portugal, Spain and some of their former colonies, like Brazil, Nicaragua, and Panama. The term is derived from the term ''marca'', meaning a "march, mark", plus the prefix ''co''-, meaning "together, jointly". The ''comarca'' is known in Aragonese as ''redolada'' () and in Basque as ''eskualde'' (). In addition, in Galician, ''comarcas'' are also called ''bisbarras'' (). Although the English word "county" and its near synonym "shire" have similar meanings, they are usually translated into Spanish and Portuguese as ''condado'', a term which in the Iberian peninsula only refers to regions historically ruled by a ''conde'' (count or earl). However, "comarca" is occasionally used, with examples including the Spanish Wikipedia entry for "comarca" and some translations of The Lord of the Rings (see below). La Carballeda
La Carballeda () is a ''comarca'' located in the northwest of the province of Zamora, Castilla y León, western Spain. Its area is 1,216.54 km². Despite of the strong identity of its inhabitants, this historical region has not been able to achieve the necessary legal recognition for its administrative development. Therefore its municipalities have resorted to organizing themselves in mancomunidad, the only legal formula that has allowed the region to manage its public municipal resources meaningfully. The capital of the province is Mombuey and the most populated town is Villardeciervos, even though its population is only 491. The name 'La Carballeda' originated in the great number of ''Quercus robur'' oaks, locally known as ''carballos'', in the comarca. The Sierra de la Culebra mountain range, one of the few areas in Western Europe having a sizeable population of wild wolves, is located in the southwest of the comarca. Puebla De Sanabria
Puebla de Sanabria (; ) is a small town located in the north-western part of the province of Zamora in Spain, between the rivers Tera and Castro. It is the economic and political centre of the ''comarca'' of Sanabria. Sanabria Lake Natural Park
The Sanabria Lake Natural Park (Spanish: ''Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria'') is a natural park in Spain located around Sanabria Lake in the Sanabria comarca, northwest part of the Zamora Province, in the mountainous area of Sierra Segundera and Sierra de la Cabrera. It occupies a surface area of 22,365 ha, with heights ranging from 997 m at the lake banks to the 2,124 m of the peak of Peña Trevinca. The park spans across the municipalities of Galende, Cobreros, Trefacio y Porto de Sanabria. Lake With its 318.7 ha, the lake that gives the name to the park is the largest glacial lake of the Iberian Peninsula. Its maximum depth is 51 m.
