San Rafael is a canton in the Heredia province of Costa Rica. The head city is in San Rafael district. History San Rafael was created on 28 May 1885 by decree 10. Geography San Rafael has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. The canton is northeast of the provincial capital city of Heredia, reaching from the suburbs high into the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range). Cordillera Central (Costa Rica)
The Cordillera Central is a volcanic mountain range in central Costa Rica which continues from the Continental Divide to east of Cordillera de Tilarán. It extends 80 km from Tapezco Pass to the Turrialba Volcano and ending on the Pacuare River. It is separated from Cordillera de Tilarán by Balsa River and Platanar and Zarcero hills. The Cordillera Central is part of the American Cordillera, a chain of mountain ranges (cordillera) that consists of an almost continuous sequence of mountain ranges that form the western "backbone" of North America, Central America, South America and Antarctica. The Costa Rica 2011 Census was undertaken by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (''Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos'' (INEC)) in Costa Rica. The semi-autonomous government body, INEC, was created by Census Law No. 7839 on 4 November 1998.
