San Luis Obispo Handicap
The San Luis Obispo Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The race is open to horses age four and up, willing to race one and one-half miles on the turf. A Grade II event, it offers a purse of $150,000. Inaugurated as the Washington's Birthday Handicap in 1950, it was run on dirt until 1954 when it became a turf race. For 1973, 1980 and 2005, the race was transferred to the dirt track. There was no race from 1963 through 1967 but returned in 1968 as the San Luis Obispo Handicap, named for the city of San Luis Obispo further up the Central Coast of California from Santa Anita Park. It was started on the turf course's backstretch, instead of the hillside, in 1990, 1992 and 1993. Santa Anita Park is a Thoroughbred racetrack in Arcadia, California, United States. It offers some of the prominent horse racing events in the United States during early fall, winter and in spring. Champ Pegasus (foaled April 6th, 2006) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 2010 Clement L. Hirsch Turf Championship Stakes. Career Champ Pegasus' first race was on December 9, 2009, at Hollywood Park, where he came in 5th. He gained his first win on April 14, 2010, at Santa Anita, and then won again at Hollywood Park on June 12, 2010. He won his first graded race on August 29, 2010, by winning the 2010 Del Mar Handicap. He then won his second graded race on October 3, 2010, as he won the Clement L. Hirsch Turf Championship Stakes. He placed second in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Turf in November and then placed second against in the January 2011 San Marcos Stakes. Alex O. Solis (born March 25, 1964) is a jockey based in the United States. He lives in Glendora, California and rides predominantly in Southern California. He got his big break and his first gained national prominence when he won the 1986 Preakness Stakes with Snow Chief. In 2014, he was elected to the horse racing hall of fame and on January 1, 2015, became the 29th jockey in North American history to have 5,000 wins. Background He grew up poor on a farm in San Carlos, Panama, where he spent a lot of time around horses. Neil D. Drysdale (born 11 December 1947, Haslemere, Surrey, England) is an American-based thoroughbred race horse trainer. Based in Playa Del Rey, California, he has won two Triple Crown races – the Belmont Stakes (G1) with A.P. Indy in 1992 and the Kentucky Derby (G1) with Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2000. Career Born in Haslemere, Surrey, his father was a Royal Marine who served with the U.S. Marines in Korea. Drysdale studied at the University of Barcelona, and then taught English as a foreign language - but then switched his mind to horses.
