San Juan de Sabinas is one of the 38 municipalities of Coahuila, in north-eastern Mexico. The municipal seat lies at Nueva Rosita. The municipality covers an area of 735.4 km². As of 2005, the municipality had a total population of 40,115. Municipalities ('' municipios'' in Spanish) are the second-level administrative divisions of Mexico, where the first-level administrative division is the '' state'' (Spanish: estado). Nueva Rosita
Nueva Rosita is a town in the northeastern part of the state of Coahuila in northern Mexico. It lies about northwest of the city of Sabinas on Federal Highway 57, and serves as the municipal seat of San Juan de Sabinas municipality. Mina Rosita Vieja Disaster
The Mina Rosita Vieja disaster occurred on February 27, 1908, when a huge early-morning explosion rocked the Rosita Vieja Coal Mine near the town of San Juan de Sabinas, Coahuila. The explosion led to the deaths of 200 miners in shaft No. 2. The blast just before six a.m. on the 27th, at the shift change, was thought to be caused by firedamp. Most of those killed were Japanese immigrant laborers. This event remains the most deadly coal mine disaster in Mexican history, followed by the Mina de Barroterán coal mine disaster of 1969.
