San Juan, Trinidad And Tobago
San Juan (pronounced, in the local English dialect, "sah-wah") is a town in Trinidad and Tobago. Located in San Juan–Laventille region in Saint George County, it lies within the East-West Corridor Metropolitan Area, between Barataria and Saint Joseph. General overview San Juan is governed by the San Juan–Laventille Regional Corporation. Pronounced "Sahwah" by the local people, San Juan is the first major stop along the East–West Corridor for maxi-taxis and buses. It is located east of Port of Spain, west of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus and away from Piarco International Airport. Its suburbs are El Soccoro, Aranguez, Bourg Mulatrese, Febeau Village and Petit Bourg. The MTS Plaza in Aranguez is the home of the San Juan–Laventille Regional Corporation. Eintou Pearl Springer (formerly Pearl Eintou Springer) (born Cantaro village, Santa Cruz, Trinidad, 24 November 1944) is a poet, playwright, librarian and cultural activist from Trinidad and Tobago. In May 2002, she was named Poet Laureate of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Background Springer's work frequently deals with social issues as well as pride in her African heritage. In 2003 she retired as Director of the National Heritage Library of Trinidad and Tobago, having founded the library and been its director since October 1993. Charran Singh
Charran Kamkaran Singh (27 November 1935 - 19 November 2015) was a West Indian cricketer who played in two Test matches in 1960. In his debut Test at Queen's Park Oval, Singh's run out dismissal was the trigger for the crowd to start a riot. Singh was a left-arm orthodox spinner who played for Trinidad from 1959–60 to 1961–62. In his first match he took 5 for 69 in the first innings against Jamaica; in his second, later that season, he took 5 for 57 in the first innings against the touring MCC. Satnarayan Maharaj
Satnarayan Maharaj , also known as Sat Maharaj, (; April 17, 1931 – November 16, 2019) was a Trinidadian and Tobagonian Hindu religious leader, educationalist, and civil rights activist in Trinidad and Tobago. He was the Secretary-General of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, a major Hindu organisation in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. The Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha operates 150 mandirs and over 50 schools in Trinidad and Tobago. It was formed in 1952 when Bhadase Sagan Maraj, the father-in-law of Satnarayan Maharaj, engineered the merger of the Satanan Dharma Association and the Sanatan Dharma Board of Control. Sam Boodram
Samdeo "Sam" Boodram (14 July 1933 – 30 June 2020) was a Trinidadian chutney, bhajan, Indian classical and folk singer, cocoa farmer, and Kabir panthi mahant. He recorded over 6,000 songs over the span of his career. Early life Sam Boodram was born into a Hindu Indian family to Boodram Balroop and Babonie Boodram in El Dorado, Trinidad and Tobago, on 14 July 1933. His family later moved from El Dorado to Aranguez in San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago. He attended the Bal Maharaj Hindu School where he learned Hindustani and was introduced to Indian singing as part of a program sponsored by Chanka Maharaj, a prominent politician and landowner. When Boodram was ten years old his family moved to Cumuto. Also, at the age of ten, he won a singing competition at his school singing the song "Puchhe Bhaiya Bharat Ram Kaha Mai". Marvin Andrews CM (born 22 December 1975) is a Trinidadian former professional footballer who played as a centre back. Andrews's career includes spells at Livingston, with whom he won the Scottish League Cup in 2004, and Rangers, where he won the double of the League Cup and the Scottish Premier League title in 2005. Mahaboob Ben Ali (13 June 1927 – 7 October 2009), known as Ben Ali, was an Indo-Trinidadian American businessman and restaurateur. Ali co-founded Ben's Chili Bowl, a landmark restaurant located on U Street in Washington D.C., with his wife, Virginia Ali, in 1958. Hosay (originally from Husayn) is a Muslim Indo-Caribbean commemoration that is popularly observed in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname. In Trinidad and Tobago, multi-coloured model mausoleums or mosque-shaped model tombs known as are used to display the symbolic part of this commemoration. They are built and paraded, then ritually taken to the sea on last day of observance, and finally discarded into the water.
