San Jose, Dinagat Islands
San Jose, officially the Municipality of San Jose (Surigaonon language, Surigaonon: ''Lungsod nan San Jose''; ceb, Lungsod sa San Jose; tl, Bayan ng San Jose), is a 4th class municipality of the Philippines, municipality and capital of the Philippine Province, province of Dinagat Islands, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 26,375 people. San Jose is the seat of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA). History The Municipality of San Jose was named in honor of Jose Ecleo who was its pioneer and the father of the late renowned mayor of the Municipality of Dinagat. It was once a part of the municipality of Dinagat. The Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association, Inc. (PBMA) is a non-sectarian and non-profit charitable religious fraternal organization for men and women in the Philippines founded by Ruben Edera Ecleo Sr. (December 9, 1934 – December 20, 1987) in 1965 on the Philippine island of Dinagat, off the coast of Mindanao. Upon the senior Ecleo's death in 1987, he was succeeded by his son Ruben B. Ecleo Jr., who died in prison on May 13, 2021, after being convicted of killing his wife in 2002. As of 2013, the group claimed to have 140,000 members. It was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in Makati, Philippines on October 19, 1965 under Registration No. 28042. Surigaonon Language
Surigaonon is an Austronesian language spoken by Surigaonon people. As a regional Philippine language, it is spoken in the province of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Sur, and some portions of Agusan del Norte, especially the towns near the Mainit Lake, Agusan del Sur and Davao Oriental. External relationships Surigaonon is a member of the Bisayan languages. It has been heavily influenced by Cebuano due to the influx of many Cebuanos in the region. However, most Cebuano speakers can hardly understand Surigaonon speakers, except for Cebuanos who have been living in the region for years.
