San Isidro Air Base
The San Isidro Air Base ( es, Base Aérea de San Isidro) became operational on March 23, 1953 and is located 25 km east of Santo Domingo. It was named ''Base Aérea Trujillo'' until 1961, when the name was changed to San Isidro. Most of the units, aircraft, and helicopters of the Dominican Air Force are based there. The San Isidro track also has been a venue for automobile racing events. The Punta Caucedo VOR/DME (Ident: CDO) is located west of the airport. The San Isidro VOR/DME (Ident: SIS) is located on the field. The Air Force of the Dominican Republic ( es, Fuerza Aérea de República Dominicana), is one of the three branches of the Armed Forces of the Dominican Republic, together with the Army and the Navy. History At the end of the United States occupation of the Dominican Republic, which lasted from 1916 to 1924, General Horacio Vásquez was elected president. He began appropriating funds to expand the country's armed forces, as the military had been reduced to a police force during the US occupation. In 1928 the General consolidated the Dominican Army, and passed Law 904, which appropriated $125,000 for the purchase of aircraft for the army. The passage of decree 283 in 1932 by Dominican president General Leandro Ulloa led to the formation of as part of the Dominican Army. VOR/DME
In radio navigation, a VOR/DME is a radio beacon that combines a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) with a distance-measuring equipment (DME). The VOR allows the receiver to measure its bearing to or from the beacon, while the DME provides the slant distance between the receiver and the station. Together, the two measurements allow the receiver to compute a position fix. The VOR system was first introduced in the 1930s, but didn't enter significant commercial use until the early 1950s. It became much more practical with the introduction of low-cost Solid state (electronics), solid state receivers in the 1960s.
