The city of San Ignacio is one of the thirteen provinces that make up the Department of Cajamarca, under the administration of the regional government of Cajamarca, in Peru. It bordered on the north by the province of Zamora Chinchipe (Ecuador); on the east by the Department of Amazonas; on the south by the province of Jaen; on the west by the Department of Piura. Pagan (island)
Pagan is a volcanic island in the Marianas archipelago in the northwest Pacific Ocean, under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. It lies midway between Alamagan to the south, and Agrihan to the north. The island has been largely uninhabited ever since most of the residents were evacuated due to volcanic eruptions in 1981. The first European contact was in 1669, when the island was sighted by the Spanish missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores who named it ''San Ignacio'' ( Saint Ignatius in Spanish). San Ignacio Lagoon
San Ignacio Lagoon (Laguna San Ignacio) is a lagoon located in Mulegé Municipality of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, 59 kilometers (37 mi) from San Ignacio, Mexico, and Highway 1. It is one of the winter sanctuaries of the eastern Pacific gray whales (''Eschrichtius robustus''). History San Ignacio Lagoon was discovered by a whaling captain, Jared Poole, brother-in-law to whaling captain Charles Melville Scammon. Scammon's visit to the lagoon in 1860 with six whaling vessels and subsequent whaling contributed to the near extinction of the Pacific Gray Whale. However, today the lagoon is one of the primary destinations for migrating Pacific gray whales. Today, it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is where gray whales can breed and calve undisturbed by humans. The whales may reach 45 feet in length and 40 tons in weight. San Ignacio Río Muerto
San Ignacio Río Muerto is a small town surrounded by San Ignacio Río Muerto Municipality in the southwest of the Mexican state of Sonora. Health and education There were 54 schools and one small health clinic in 2000 Economic Activity Agriculture covered 35,000 productive hectares (2000), most of which were irrigated. Main crops are wheat, garbanzo beans, cártamo, sorghum, watermelon, chile and melons. Agricultural production is transported to Ciudad Obregón for packing and export to the United States. Cattle raising was carried out on a small scale and there were more than 6,000 head in 2000.
