It was built as Ducal Chapel by Azzone Visconti in 1330, and finished in 1336, as indicated by an inscription on the walls. It was originally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin but Azzone, who had gout, later changed the dedication to St. Gotthard of Hildesheim, patron of those with gout. The design was by Francesco Pecorari from Cremona. The octagonal bell tower has the first example of public clock (before, sun-dials were used). The interior was restored in the Neoclassicist era by Giocondo Albertolli. San Gottardo Altarpiece
The San Gottardo Altarpiece is an oil on canvas painting by Giovanni Cariani, previously dated to 1520 but now thought to have been begun in 1517 and completed in 1518. This made it perhaps his first major work and certainly the first work he produced in Bergamo after arriving there on 15 August 1517 - St Joseph was the city's patron saint. It was commissioned as an altarpiece by the council of the Scuola di san Giuseppe for the church of San Gottardo. There was tension between the commissioners and the artist and - instead of Cariani - they opted for Lorenzo Lotto and Andrea Previtali, Previtali for the larger works in the church. The painting was taken out of the church when it was suppressed and demolished under the Napoleonic regime. The main work and its predella of the Flight into Egypt were both in the palazzo Nuovo in Bergamo in 1803, when the latter was sold for 80 francs to Giuseppe SonzognoChiara Paratico, La bottega dei Marinoni, pittori di Desenzano al Serio, sec. The Gotthard Massif or Saint-Gotthard Massif (german: Gotthardmassiv or ; it, Massiccio del San Gottardo; rm, Massiv dal Gottard) is a mountain range in the Alps in Switzerland, located at the border of four cantons: Valais, Ticino, Uri and Graubünden. It is delimited by the Nufenen Pass on the west, by the Furka Pass and the Oberalp Pass on the north and by the Lukmanier Pass on the east. The eponymous Gotthard Pass, lying at the heart of the massif, is the main route from north to south (excluding tunnels). The region of the Gotthard lies at the heart of the Swiss Alps, often referred to as the "water tower of Europe". Three major rivers take their source in the Gotthard Massif: the Reuss, Rhine and Ticino. A fourth river, the Rhône, takes its source in very close proximity of the massif, just north of the Furka Pass. A trekking itinerary, the Vier-Quellen-Weg ("four springs trail"), crosses the Gotthard Massif. Peaks The highest peaks of the massif are Pizzo RotondoKarl ...
