San Giovanni In Leopardis
San Giovanni in Leopardis is a former Roman Catholic church and Benedictine church located in a hilltop south of the town of Borgorose, in the province of Rieti, region of Lazio, Italy. Only ruined and stripped elements of the Romanesque church walls and former crypt remain. Once attached to a Benedictine abbley, linked to the Abbey of Montecassino, the site is first mentioned in 1153 in a papal bull by Anastasius IV. Putatively built using elements at the site of an Ancient Roman temple dedicated to Diana. The layout of the church was that of a Latin cross with the crypt likely located below a semicircular apse and presbytery. The building was refurbished in 990 after a severe earthquake. In 1231, the church was dependant of the abbey of San Pietro in Ferentillo. But parish functions were transferred since the 15th century to the church of Santa Caterina, later named Sant'Anastasia, at Borgorose. Anastasius IV
Pope Anastasius IV ( – 3 December 1154), born Corrado Demetri della Suburra, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 8 July 1153 to his death in 1154. He is the most recent pope to take the name "Anastasius" upon his election. Early life He was a Roman, son of Benedictus de Suburra, probably of the family of Demetri, and became a secular clerk. He was created cardinal-priest of S. Pudenziana by Pope Paschal II no later than in 1114. In 1127 or 1128, Pope Honorius II promoted him to the suburbicarian See of Sabina. San Pietro In Ferentillo
San Pietro in Valle is a medieval abbey in the ''comune'' (township) of Ferentillo in Umbria. The Romanesque church houses some particularly fine Roman sarcophagi; the walls of the nave are decorated with a large cycle of good Romanesque frescoes. The monastery buildings are private property and today house a luxury hotel. History It was built in the 8th century by Faroaldo II, Duke of Spoleto, in the places where the hermits Lazzaro and Giovanni are said to have lived. According to a legend, the Duke of Spoleto saw in a dream the same Saint Peter who invited him to build a Benedictine monastery in the place of the present abbey.
