San Francisco Herald
The ''San Francisco Herald'', or ''San Francisco Daily Herald'', was a newspaper that was published from 1850 to 1862 in San Francisco, California. The paper stood out aggressively against crime and corruption associated with the California Gold Rush. The editors fought several duels with men whom they had offended. In 1856 the paper attacked the Vigilance Committee, which was taking the law into its own hands. Supporters of the committee withdrew their subscriptions and advertising, almost forcing the newspaper to close. However, the newspaper continued to be published with smaller circulation until 1862. Early years John Nugent and John E. Foy started the San Francisco Herald on 1 June 1850. In July 1850 Nugent bought out Foy for $15,000. Nugent edited the paper with Edmund Randolph, and William Walker had become a contributor by 1851. John Nugent (journalist)
John Nugent ( – March 29, 1880) was an Irish journalist and U.S. government agent. Nugent was born in County Galway but travelled with his parents to the United States at an early age. He was educated at a Catholic college in New Jersey. In the 1840s, he worked as a journalist with the '' New York Herald''. In 1848, Nugent was leaked a copy of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which would end the Mexican–American War after it was amended and approved by the Senate. Nugent was questioned by senators but did not reveal his source. Subsequently, Nugent traveled with a party of Forty-Niners from New York, led by John Coffee Hays, that traveled to California from San Antonio, Texas, over the Southern Route, through El Paso across New Mexico Territory to Fort Yuma. The Daily Alta California
The ''Alta California'' or ''Daily Alta California'' (often miswritten ''Alta Californian'' or ''Daily Alta Californian'') was a 19th-century San Francisco newspaper. ''California Star'' The ''Daily Alta California'' descended from the first newspaper published in the city, Samuel Brannan's ''California Star'', which debuted on January 9, 1847. Brannan, who had earlier assisted in publishing several Mormon newspapers in New York, had brought a small press with him when he immigrated to California as part of a group of Mormon settlers in 1846 aboard ''The Brooklyn''. With Dr. E. B. Jones as editor, the ''California Star'' was the city's only newspaper until an older publication, '' The Californian'', moved to Yerba Buena (as San Francisco was then called) from Monterey in mid-1847. Archibald Alexander Ritchie
Archibald Alexander Ritchie (28 January 1806 – 9 July 1856) was an American ship captain, China trader, and California businessman. Early years Ritchie's family originated in Scotland and Ireland. His grandfather, William Ritchie, was born on board the ship carrying Ritchie's great-grandparents to America. His father, Hugh Ritchie, married Esther Alexander, of a family that had emigrated to Virginia in 1737. Archibald Alexander Ritchie was born in New Castle, Delaware on 28 January 1806. He was expected to join the navy, but ran away from home at the age of 13 and joined a ship that was sailing to China. At the age of 18 he was captain of the ''Treaty'', owned by the Marine Insurance Company of Philadelphia. In 1831 Ritchie married Martha Hamilton of Philadelphia. In 1832 their first child, Eliza, was born while he was away on a voyage to bring tea and silk from China. San Francisco Committee Of Vigilance
The San Francisco Committee of Vigilance was a vigilante group formed in 1851. The catalyst for its formation was the criminality of the Sydney Ducks gang. It was revived in 1856 in response to rampant crime and corruption in the municipal government of San Francisco, California. The need for extralegal intervention was apparent with the explosive population growth following the discovery of gold in 1848. The small town of about 900 individuals grew to a booming city of over 20,000 very rapidly. This overwhelming growth in population made it nearly impossible for the previously established law enforcement to regulate any longer which resulted in the organization of vigilantes. These militias hanged eight people and forced several elected officials to resign. Benjamin Franklin Washington (April 7, 1820 – January 22, 1872) was a relative of George Washington. He was involved in a duel with C. A.
