Samuel Whitbread (1720–1796)
Samuel Whitbread (30 August 1720 – 11 June 1796) was an English brewer and Member of Parliament. In 1742, he established a brewery that in 1799 became Whitbread & Co Ltd. Early years Samuel Whitbread was born on 20 August 1720 at Cardington in Bedfordshire, the seventh of eight children of Henry Whitbread. At 12, he received two years' education with a local clergyman, before being sent at age 14 to London to live with family (most likely, his uncle). At age 16, his family paid £300 for him to be taken as an apprentice at a brewery under John Wightman ( Master of the Brewers' Company from 1734 to 1735). Brewing After learning the brewery trade, Samuel Whitbread went into partnership with Godfrey and Thomas Shewell in 1742, investing £2,600 in two of the Shewell's small breweries, the Goat Brewhouse (where porter was produced) in Old Street and a brewery nearby in Brick Lane (used to produce pale and amber beers). Samuel Whitbread (1764–1815)
Samuel Whitbread (18 January 1764 – 6 July 1815) was a British politician. Early life Whitbread was born on 18 January 1764 in Cardington, Bedfordshire, the son of the brewer Samuel Whitbread. He was educated at Eton College, Christ Church, Oxford, and St John's College, Cambridge, after which he embarked on a European "Grand Tour", visiting Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Poland, Prussia, France, and Italy. He returned to England in May 1786 and joined his father's successful brewing business. Member of Parliament Whitbread was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bedford in 1790 (his father too had been MP) and he remained MP for twenty-three years. Whitbread was a reformer — a champion of religious and civil rights, for the abolition of slavery, a proponent of a national education system and, in 1795, sponsor of an unsuccessful bill for the introduction of minimum wages. Samuel Charles Whitbread
Samuel Charles Whitbread (16 February 1796 – 27 May 1879) was a British Member of Parliament, member of the Whitbread brewing family and founding president of the Royal Meteorological Society. Early life and education Whitbread was the son of Samuel Whitbread and Lady Elizabeth Grey. Grey was the daughter of General Charles Grey, 1st Earl Grey and sister of Prime Minister Charles Grey. He was educated at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge where he studied mathematics, moral philosophy and classics. On 6 July 1815, Whitbread's father took his own life, whereupon his two sons, William Henry (then aged 20) and Samual Charles (19), inherited the family business and estates. Samuel Whitbread (1830–1915)
Samuel Whitbread (5 May 1830 – 25 December 1915) was an English brewer and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1852 to 1895. Biography Whitbread was the eldest son of Samuel Charles Whitbread of Cardington, Bedfordshire and his wife Julia Brand, daughter of Lord Dacre. He was a member of the Whitbread brewing family. Whitbread was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was private secretary to Sir George Grey in 1850 and in 1852 was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bedford. He was a frequent speaker during his time in the commons and was Civil Lord of the Admiralty from June 1859 to March 1863. He held his seat until 1895. Whitbread lived at Southill Park, Biggleswade. He was J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Bedfordshire. He died at the age of 85. Samuel Howard Whitbread (8 January 1858 – 29 July 1944) was a British Member of Parliament and a member of the Whitbread brewing family. Career He was the son of Samuel Whitbread. He served as the Member of Parliament for the constituencies of Huntingdon and Luton (until 1895). He was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Bedfordshire on 31 March 1906.
