Samuel Waley
Sam Waley (born 31 March 1983) is a Tasmanian-born Australian former representative lightweight rower. He won a bronze medal at the 2004 World Rowing Championships. Club and state rowing Samuel Waley was educated at the Friends' School in Hobart where he was introduced to rowing. He rowed in that school's first VIII in 2001 with his future Australian lightweight crew-mate Kaspar Hebblewhite. His senior club rowing was from the Lindisfarne Rowing Club in Hobart. In 2002 he held a scholarship with the Tasmanian Institute of Sport. He made state selection for Tasmania in the six seat of the 2001 youth eight contesting the Noel Wilkinson Trophy at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. He rowed in three consecutive Tasmanian youth eights from 2001 to 2003. In 2005 he was selected in the Tasmanian's senior men's eight contesting the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. World Rowing Championships
The World Rowing Championships is an international rowing regatta organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). It is a week-long event held at the end of the northern hemisphere summer and in non-Olympic years is the highlight of the international rowing calendar. History The first event was held in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 1962. The event then was held every four years until 1974, when it became an annual competition. Also in 1974, Men's lightweight and Women's open weight events were added to the championships. Initially, Men's events were 2000 metres long and Women's events 1000 metres. 2004 World Rowing Championships
The 2004 World Rowing Championships were World Rowing Championships that were held from 27 July to 1 August 2004 in conjunction with the World Junior Rowing Championships on lake Banyoles in Catalonia, Spain. Since 2004 was an Olympic year for rowing, the World Championships did not include Olympic events scheduled for the 2004 Summer Olympics. Kaspar Hebblewhite
Kaspar Hebblewhite (born 3 July 1983) is a Tasmanian born Australian former representative lightweight rower. He won a bronze medal at the 2004 World Rowing Championships. Club and state rowing Hebblewhite was born in Hobart to John Hebblewhite and Adriane (nee Elbrecht). His mother Adriane was a medical doctor who worked for a number of years with the Huon Valley Health Centre until her 2013 death. Kaspar Hebblewhite was educated at the Friends' School in Hobart where he was introduced to rowing. He rowed in that school's first VIII in 2001 with his future Australian lightweight crew-mate Sam Waley. Following school Hebblewhite's senior club rowing was from the Lindisfarne Rowing Club. Junior World Rowing Championships
The World Rowing Junior Championships is an international rowing regatta organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). A rower or coxswain shall be classified as a Junior until 31 December of the year in which he reaches the age of 18. After that date, he shall be classified as an Under 23 rower. During Olympic years it is held at the same location as the Senior World Rowing Championships. The first FISA Youth Regatta was held in 1967 and has been held every year since then, being raised to the status of FISA Junior Champs in 1970 and Junior World Champs in 1985. Many European countries send athletes not up to the standard for World Championships to the Coupe de la Jeunesse. World Rowing U23 Championships is an international rowing regatta organized by FISA The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 ("FISA" , ) is a United States federal law that establishes procedures for the physical and electronic surveillance and the collection of "foreign intelligence information" between "foreign pow ...
