Samuel Stoner Homestead
The Samuel Stoner Homestead, also known as Indian Road Farm, Bechtel Farm, and Wiest Dam, is an historic home and farm property that is located in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. History and architectural features The historic house was developed in three stages: a -story, Germanic-influenced, limestone, banked house that was built between 1798 and 1801, a second story added circa 1835, and a two-story, three-bay, stone addition that was built circa 1850. The house measures sixty-two feet by thirty feet. West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania
West Manchester Township is a township in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 19,217 at the 2020 census. History In 1799, West Manchester Township was formed from part of the western portions of Manchester Township. Farming, weaving, and milling were among the major occupations. During the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign of the American Civil War, the township was a main thoroughfare for two invading forces of the Confederate Army. On June 28, 1863, Major General Jubal A. Early's division marched east–west through the township en route to seize York. On July 1, J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry rode north–south through the township following the Battle of Hanover on their way to Dover. West Manchester Township farmers and residents lost horses and mules to the Confederates. Springhouse
A spring house, or springhouse, is a small building, usually of a single room, constructed over a spring. While the original purpose of a springhouse was to keep the spring water clean by excluding fallen leaves, animals, etc., the enclosing structure was also used for refrigeration before the advent of ice delivery and, later, electric refrigeration. The water of the spring maintains a constant cool temperature inside the spring house throughout the year. Food that would otherwise spoil, such as meat, fruit, or dairy products, could be kept there, safe from animal depredations as well. Springhouses thus often also served as pumphouses, milkhouses, and root cellars.
