Samuel Ongley (died 1726)
Sir Samuel Ongley (1647–1726), of Old Warden, Bedfordshire and Mincing Lane, London, was an English politician. Born in Maidstone, Kent, he became a London merchant. In 1698 he purchased the Old Warden Estate from Paulet St John, Earl of Bolingbroke. He was appointed High Sheriff of Bedfordshire for 1703. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of Great Britain for Maidstone 1713 to 1715 and was knighted in 1713. He died unmarried in 1726, leaving his estate to his nephew, also Samuel Ongley, who became MP for Bedford. Samuel ''Šəmūʾēl'', Tiberian: ''Šămūʾēl''; ar, شموئيل or صموئيل '; el, Σαμουήλ ''Samouḗl''; la, Samūēl is a figure who, in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, plays a key role in the transition from the biblical judges to the United Kingdom of Israel under Saul, and again in the monarchy's transition from Saul to David. He is venerated as a prophet in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In addition to his role in the Hebrew scriptures, Samuel is mentioned in Jewish rabbinical literature, in the Christian New Testament, and in the second chapter of the Quran (although Islamic texts do not mention him by name). Church Of St Leonard, Old Warden
The Abbey Church of St Leonard of Old Warden is a Grade I listed church in Old Warden, Bedfordshire, England. It became a listed building on 31 October 1966. Design St Leonard's is named for Leonard of Noblac and dates to the early 12th century but the present structure is predominantly 13th century, with 14th, 15th and 16th century additions. The base of the tower, including the tower arch, is 12th century Norman, with the remainder rebuilt in the 15th century. The church was considerably reworked in the mid and late 19th century when the elaborate wooden interior was added. The church is built mainly of brown cobblestones with limestone dressings, with some later working in red brick and in coursed limestone. The south porch was built in 1952 to a design by Professor Richardson and is timber framed with red brick infill and a gabled tiled roof. Samuel Ongley (died 1747)
Samuel Ongley (1697 – 15 June 1747), of Old Warden, Bedfordshire, was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1729 to 1747. Ongley was born in London, the son of draper Samuel Ongley and nephew and heir of Sir Samuel Ongley, MP of Old Warden Park, Bedfordshire. He matriculated at St John's College, Oxford in 1716. In 1726, he inherited the Old Warden estate on his uncle's death. He also married Anne Harvey, the daughter of John Harvey of Northill, Bedfordshire on 19 September 1726. Ongley was returned as Member of Parliament (MP) for New Shoreham at a by-election on 29 January 1729. At the 1734 British general election he changed seats and was returned for Bedford.
