Samuel Matthews (captain)
Captain Samuel Mathews (c. 1580 – November 30, 1657) was a Virginia planter, political figure, and the father of Governor Samuel Mathews (Colonial Virginia governor). Biography Born in England, Mathews was the first of the family to emigrate from England to The New World, arriving at Jamestown by 1619. He established a plantation, "Mathews Manor", later known as Denbigh, which was located on the north side of the James River at Blunt Point, the confluence of the Warwick and the James rivers in the area which later became Warwick County, Virginia (and which is now within the city limits of Newport News). He eventually had several other land holdings, including one near Henricus and another at Old Point Comfort. Known as Colonel Mathews, the elder Samuel became one of the most prominent men in the colony. Samuel Lloyd Matthews (born 10 March 1997) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for Havant & Waterlooville. Career AFC Bournemouth Born in Poole, Matthews joined AFC Bournemouth at the age of 10 and signed his first senior contract with the club in 2014, on his 17th birthday. His first taste of senior football came in a loan spell with his hometown club of Poole Town in 2014. Samuel Matthews (hermit)
Samuel Matthews (died 1802) better known as the Dulwich Hermit was an 18th-century London hermit, famous for his unresolved 1802 murder. Biography Matthews was born in south Wales about 1733, and came to Dulwich in 1772, being employed as a gardener. He was described as having led a happy domestic life - living with his wife and four children. Upon the death of his wife in about 1775, he is said to have entered a deep melancholy and have withdrawn from civilization. He solicited and obtained permission from the master and Wardens of Dulwich college to dig cave in Dulwich Wood and erect a hut over it. He went on to live 23 years at the dwelling. He was visited regularly by locals who dubbed him as the ''Wild Man of the Wood'' and described him as quiet, friendly and learned man - quite apart from his savage and dirty surroundings.
