Samuel Kettell
Samuel Kettell (1800–1855) was an American author. He also wrote under the name "Sampson Short-and-fat". He compiled ''Specimens of American Poetry, with Critical and Biographical Notices'', the first comprehensive anthology of American poetry, which was published by Samuel Griswold Goodrich in 1829. The three volume collection included 188 poets, a historical introduction, and chronological listing of American poetry. The volumes came to be dubbed "Goodrich's Kettle of Poetry." From September 1847 to March 1848 Kettell edited Merry's Museum ''Merry's Museum'' (1841–1872) was an illustrated children's magazine established by Samuel Griswold Goodrich in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1841. Samuel Griswold Goodrich
Samuel Griswold Goodrich (August 19, 1793 – May 9, 1860), better known under his pseudonym Peter Parley, was an American author. Biography Goodrich was born at Ridgefield, Connecticut, the son of a Congregational minister. Goodrich was largely self-educated, and became an assistant in a country store at Danbury, Connecticut, which he left in 1808, and later again at Hartford, Connecticut, until 1811. From 1816 to 1822 he was a bookseller and publisher in Hartford. He visited Europe from 1823 to 1824, and moved to Boston in 1826. In 1833 he bought in nearby Roxbury and built a home in what is now Jamaica Plain. There he continued in the publishing business, and from 1828 to 1842 published an illustrated annual, '' The Token'', to which he was a frequent contributor both in prose and verse. Merry's Museum
''Merry's Museum'' (1841–1872) was an illustrated children's magazine established by Samuel Griswold Goodrich in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1841. Louisa May Alcott served as editor for a year or so, and also contributed stories, as did Lucretia Peabody Hale, Caroline Hewins, Rebecca Sophia Clarke, Helen W. Pierson, and others. For some time it was published in New York. Overview Samuel Griswold Goodrich established the magazine in Boston in 1841. He continued to oversee the magazine until 1854. Goodrich had previously written books for children under the guise of a character named Peter Parley. For his new project, he created a similar figure named Robert Merry who "narrated" the contents of the magazine. In 1868 Boston's Horace B. Fuller bought the enterprise, and remained as publisher until 1872, when the magazine ceased. At the departure of John N. Stearns, Fuller invited Louisa May Alcott to serve as editor for an annual salary of $500. She found the offer more attractive ...
