Sami El Choum
Sami Ali El Choum ( ar, سامي علي الشوم; born 22 June 1982) is a Lebanese football coach and former player who is head coach of club Sporting. A defensive midfielder for Lebanese Premier League side Ansar, El Choum remained at the Beirut-based club for over 10 years, winning multiple titles. He played for Homenetmen in the Lebanese Second Division for one year. El Choum represented the Lebanon national team in 2003. Between 2017 and 2018 El Choum coached Ansar, winning the 2016–17 Lebanese FA Cup, before becoming coach of Third Division side Sporting in 2018, leading them to back-to-back promotions to the Premier League. Club career El Choum signed for Ansar's youth side on 31 October 1997. He debuted in the Lebanese Premier League during the 2002–03 season. The Lebanon national football team has used footballers born outside Lebanon throughout its history with varying success. As a result of the dominance of clubs founded by the Armenian diaspora in Lebanon, between the 1940s and 1960s the national team heavily featured Lebanese players of Armenian origin. The established presence of Armenians in the team led the Lebanese Football Association (LFA) to naturalise several Armenian players born in Armenia during the 1990s to play internationally for Lebanon. Most notably, Vardan Ghazaryan was the national team's leading top goalscorer. In preparation for the 2000 AFC Asian Cup, the LFA naturalised five Brazilian-born players of Lebanese descent; their presence was generally not well received, as it was felt that they did not improve the level of the team. Ahmad Ali El Choum ( ar, أحمد علي الشوم; born 3 August 1983) is a Lebanese former footballer who played as a left-back for Ansar and the Lebanon national team. Club career El Choum began his senior career at Lebanese Premier League side Ansar, during the 1997–98 season. In his first season at the club, El Choum won three trophies: a league title, a Lebanese Elite Cup, the club's first, and a Lebanese Super Cup. The Lebanese Second Division ( ar, الدوري اللبناني الدرجة الثانية) is the second division of Lebanese football. It is controlled by the Lebanese Football Association. The top two teams qualify for the Lebanese Premier League and replace the relegated teams, while the bottom two are relegated to the Lebanese Third Division. The league was initially scheduled to start in September, before being postponed to 2 October as part of preventive measures by the state towards the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the first season to feature a "split" format, where the season is divided into two phases. In the first phase, each club plays against each other once, for a total of 11 matchdays. In the second phase, the league is split into two halves – the "top six" and the "bottom six". Points are carried over from the first phase, and each club plays five games within its own half.
