Same-sex Marriage In The Falkland Islands
Same-sex marriage in the Falkland Islands has been legal since 29 April 2017. A law to permit same-sex couples to marry passed the Legislative Assembly on 30 March, and was given royal assent by Governor Colin Roberts on 13 April. The territory also recognises civil partnerships, open to both same-sex and different-sex couples. The Falkland Islands was the seventh British Overseas Territory to legalise same-sex marriage, and the third civilian one to do so, after the Pitcairn Islands and Gibraltar. Background First claimed by the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1765, the Falkland Islands was periodically garrisoned by British, French and Spanish forces until 1811 when all the garrisons were withdrawn. Legislative Assembly Of The Falkland Islands
The Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands is the unicameral legislature of the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands. The Legislative Assembly replaced the Legislative Council (which had existed since 1845) when the new Constitution of the Falklands came into force in 2009 and laid out the composition, powers and procedures of the islands' legislature. The Legislative Assembly consists of eight elected members, two ex officio members (the Chief Executive and the Director of Finance), and the Speaker. Although they take part in proceedings, the ex officio members do not have the right to vote in the Legislative Assembly. Phyl Rendell
Phyllis Mary Rendell ( née Oliver) is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency from 2013 to 2017. Rendell was born Phyllis Mary Oliver to farmer John Oliver in the Falkland Islands and attended Darwin Boarding School before completing her education in Derbyshire, going on to study at Goldsmiths, University of London. She qualified as a teacher in the UK and returned to the Falklands to work in Stanley as a teacher. In the 1970s, she met and married Mike Rendell, who was stationed in the Falklands as part of Naval Party 8901. After working for six years in Saudi Arabia, Rendell returned to the Falklands in 1982 shortly after the end of the war. Michael Poole (politician)
Michael Poole (born 4 October 1984) is a British, Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2013 to 2017. Poole was the first member of the Legislative Assembly to have been born after the Falklands War. Prior to his election Poole was a Senior Economist and Statistical Analyst in the Policy Unit of the Falkland Islands Government. He had previously worked as a manager in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley and was a representative of a fishing industry association. Ian Hansen (born 1958) is a Falkland Islander farmer and politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency since winning an uncontested by-election in 2011 which filled the seat vacated by Bill Luxton. Hansen had already served on the Legislative Assembly from 2003 until 2009. He was initially elected as a member of the Legislative Council, which was reconstituted into the Legislative Assembly with the implementation of the 2009 Constitution. From 1974–1980, Hansen worked as a shepherd at Hill Cove before moving to work on Pebble Island as a stockman. He was a founding member of the Falkland Islands Farmers Association and was chairman of the Rural Business Association from 2000 until 2003. Roger Edwards (politician)
Roger Edwards (born 1946) is a former Royal Marine who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency since the 2009 general election, winning re-election in 2013 and 2017. He was previously a Member of the Legislative Council from 2001–2005 and is the father of former MLA Emma Edwards. Edwards joined the Royal Marines in 1963, but transferred to the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm in September 1965, before going on to the Britannia Royal Naval College during which time he trained to be a pilot at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. Janet Lynda Cheek (née Biggs; born 1948) is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2009 to 2017. Cheek won re-election in 2013 but stepped down from the assembly at the 2017 election. She was previously a Member of the Legislative Council from 1997 to 2005. Jan Cheek was born in Stanley and spent much of her childhood in South Georgia. For her A-Levels she was awarded a government scholarship to a study at a grammar school in Dorset. Cheek worked as a Secondary School English teacher from 1969 until 1989. She then moved to Fortuna Ltd. where she rose to become co-owner and director until her retirement in 2008. A reading of a bill is a stage of debate on the bill held by a general body of a legislature. In the Westminster system, developed in the United Kingdom, there are generally three readings of a bill as it passes through the stages of becoming, or failing to become, legislation.
