Sam Webb (communist)
Samuel Webb (born June 4, 1945) is an American activist and political leader, who served as the Chairman of the Communist Party USA from 2000 to 2014, succeeding the party's longest running leader Gus Hall. Webb did not accept nomination to be reelected as chairman at the 30th National Convention of the Communist Party USA in 2014, at which John Bachtell was elected the party's new chairman. Webb continued to serve on the party's National Committee until 2016. Biography Samuel Webb was born in Maine and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1967. He holds an M.A. in economics from the University of Connecticut. He worked as a Communist Party organizer in Michigan from 1978–1988. Samuel Blachley Webb (1753–1807) was the commanding officer of the 9th Connecticut Regiment in the American Revolutionary War. Early life and family Samuel Blachley Webb was born on December 3, 1753. He was the second son of a wealthy Connecticut merchant, Joseph Webb, and his wife, Mehitabel Nott Webb. The Webb family lived in a large home on Broad Street in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Webb's father died in 1761 when Samuel was eight years old. His mother married the family attorney, Silas Deane, two years later. Webb's mother died in 1767, and Webb's stepfather soon remarried. Deane's second wife, Elizabeth Saltonstall, was a granddaughter of Gurdon Saltonstall, a governor of the Connecticut Colony. Samuel Webbe The Younger
Samuel Webbe the younger (1768–1843) was an English music teacher and composer. Life The son of Samuel Webbe (1740–1816), he was born in London, and studied the organ, piano, and vocal composition under his father and Muzio Clementi. Webbe in his active interest in glee clubs followed in the footsteps of his father, and composed many canons and glees. In 1798 he moved to Liverpool, as organist to the Paradise Street Unitarian Chapel, where John Yates (1755–1826) was minister. Around 1817 Webbe joined John Bernard Logier in London, teaching the use of the chiroplast. There Webbe became organist to the chapel of the Spanish embassy, before returning to Liverpool, where he was appointed organist to St. Nicholas and to St. Patrick's Roman Catholic chapel. Samuel Webbe (1740 – 25 May 1816) was an English composer. Life Born in Menorca in 1740, Webbe was brought up in London. His father died when he was still an infant, and his mother returned to London where she raised Webbe in difficult circumstances. At the age of 11 he was apprenticed to a cabinet maker, and during the first year of his apprenticeship his mother died. Webbe was an autodidact. He first discovered his aptitude for music when called on to repair the case of a harpsichord. During the course of the repair work he taught himself to play the instrument. Near the end of the job he was overheard playing it. As a result of this incident he turned to the study of music under Carl Barbandt. Samuel Webb (5 August 1937 – 24 September 2022) was a British architect who was famous for his work on the structural and fire safety of Tower Blocks following his investigation into the Ronan Point tower block. Career Webb graduated from the Northern Polytechnic in 1962. He worked as an architect at Camden Council and was subsequently a lecturer at Kent Institute of Art & Design from 1975 to 1996 and then established his own practice. Webb was a nationally elected member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects Council and the Architectural Association Council. Webb sat on the All Party Parliamentary Fire & Rescue Group. Pennsylvania Hall, "one of the most commodious and splendid buildings in the city," was an abolitionist venue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, built in 1837–38. It was a "Temple of Free Discussion", where antislavery, women's rights, and other reform lecturers could be heard. Four days after it opened it was destroyed by arson, the work of an anti-abolitionist mob. Except for the burning of the White House and the Capitol during the War of 1812, it was the worst case of arson in American history up to that date. This was only six months after the murder of Rev. Elijah P. Lovejoy by a pro-slavery mob in Illinois, a free state. The abolitionist movement consequently became stronger. Samuel Henry "Red" Webb (September 25, 1924 – February 7, 1996) was an American professional baseball player. A , right-handed pitcher, he appeared in 25 Major League games, 22 in relief, for the – New York Giants. The Washington, D.C., native graduated from McKinley Tech High School and served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He signed his first pro baseball contract with the Giants' organization and made his debut in 1946. In his first three minor league seasons, he won 18, 19 and 18 games in leagues ranging from Class C to Triple-A. Called up to the Giants in September 1948, he got into five games, including his only three starting pitcher assignments in the Majors. Sam Webb (born 11 April 1981) is a British former professional boxer who competed from 2005 to 2012. He held the British super welterweight title from 2010 to 2011. Professional career Webb's professional debut came on 7 October 2005 with a first-round KO victory over Geraint Harvey at the York Hall in Bethnal Green. He fought once more that year defeating Vadzim Astapuk again at the York Hall. Four fights the following year in 2006 resulted in three more wins but also a first career defeat for Webb. The defeat, on cuts on 30 May 2006, was to Alex Stoda a man who in three contests had yet to win any of them meaning that where Webb suffered his first loss, Stoda celebrated his first win.
