Sam Walsh AO (born 27 December 1949) is an Australian businessman who was elected to the Mitsui & Co board as a non-executive Director on 21 June 2017. Prior to this he was chief executive officer (CEO) of London-based mining company Rio Tinto Group, from 2013 to 2016. Prior to becoming CEO of Rio Tinto, Walsh served as Rio Tinto chief of the Iron Ore group, and of Rio Tinto Australia. Based in the Australian city of Perth, he oversaw company's mining operations and expansions in Pilbara, Western Australia. Early life Sam Walsh was born 1949 and he grew up in the Melbourne seaside suburb of Brighton. He was one of five children. As a boy he actively engaged in weekly church going, scouting, and learning to play the piano and the trumpet. Samuel Peter Walsh (born 2 July 2000) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was awarded the 2019 NAB Rising Star Award. He was drafted by Carlton with their first selection which was also the first overall in the 2018 national draft. Early life Walsh played his junior football for Ocean Grove, before playing under-18s football with the Geelong Falcons, in the then-named TAC Cup. He impressed massively and was touted as a sure-fire number 1 draft pick. Sam Walsh averaged an astounding 32 disposals a game as their co-captain, which bolstered his draft stock. Labelled as the 'best pure midfielder in the draft', Walsh also played in the NAB Under 18 Championships, where he represented Vic Country as captain. Samuel Walsh (August 31, 1916 – March 18, 2008), was leader of the Communist Party of Quebec for 28 years, from 1962 to 1990, and was a leader in the Communist Party of Canada and Labor-Progressive Party since the 1940s. Early life and education Walsh was born in Montreal as Saul Jerome Wolofsky. His father was Hirsch Wolofsky, publisher of the '' Keneder Adler'' (Canadian Eagle), Canada's first Yiddish newspaper. At the age of 17, Wolofsky took part in a student strike against an increase in high school tuition fees. He became a Communist with the encouragement of his older brother, Moishe, a union organizer. His father asked them to change their names to avoid embarrassing the family and so Moishe became Bill Walsh and Saul became Sam Walsh. Walsh enrolled in biology at McGill University and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938. He moved to Toronto. Samuel Walsh (artist)
Samuel Walsh was born in London, England to Irish parents in 1951. His mother was from Limerick, Ireland and his father from Ennis, Ireland. After his family returned to Ireland to relocate in Limerick, Walsh continued to live and study in London. He joined his family in Limerick in 1968, where he resided until 1990. He now lives and works in County Clare. Upon relocating to Limerick, he was educated at Villiers Secondary School, where he sat the Irish Leaving Certificate. He has stated that he struggled academically and did not receive good marks. (He was inducted into the Villiers School Roll of Honour in 2012.) After finishing secondary school, he studied at the Limerick School of Art and Design, Mary Immaculate College of Education, Limerick and the National College of Art & Design, Dublin.
