Sam Parks Jr.
Samuel McLaughlin Parks Jr. (June 23, 1909 – April 7, 1997) was an American professional golfer, the winner of the U.S. Open in 1935, his only major title. Born in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, Parks used his knowledge of the nearby Oakmont Country Club to win in June 1935 at age 25. Although a comparatively recent convert from college and amateur ranks and little-known nationally, Parks, the professional at the nearby South Hills Country Club, was the only player to negotiate Oakmont's furrowed bunkers and shaved greens in less than 300. After winning the U.S. Open, Parks played for the U.S. Ryder Cup team, matched against Alf Perry (the reigning British Open champion), the first time the U.S. Open champion would play the British Open Champion of the same year in the Ryder Cup Match. Bellevue, Pennsylvania
Bellevue is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, along the Ohio River, adjoining Pittsburgh. The population was 8,311 at the 2020 census. The borough was incorporated in 1867. There is a public park and library, the Andrew Bayne Memorial Library. Education Bellevue is served by the Northgate School District. History The land on which the borough currently sits was once part of the Depreciation Lands reserved for Revolutionary War veterans. James Wilfred Stevenson Thomson (29 October 1908 – 28 June 1985) was a Scottish-American professional golfer, who is notable for losing the 1936 PGA Championship to Denny Shute, 3&2. Thomson was born in North Berwick, the son of pro golfer Wilfred Thomson. His cousin Jack White won the 1904 Open Championship. In 1921 his father Wilfred was appointed pro at The Country Club of Virginia. The following year, Jimmy sailed to the U.S. with his mother and sister Emily. Thomson appeared in the movie ''The Caddy'' with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. He also featured in ''Shoot Yourself Some Golf'' with Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman.
