Sam Jones (Australian Politician)
Samuel Barry Jones (8 July 1923 – 26 January 1999) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1965 until 1984 and a member of the ALP. Early life Samuel Barry Jones was born in Newcastle. He was the son of a steelworker and a brother of Charlie Jones. He was educated to intermediate level at Newcastle Boys' High School and trained as a fitter and turner. He was an office-holder in the Amalgamated Engineering Union. Political career Sam Jones joined the Labor Party in 1945 and served as vice president and secretary of Tighes Hill branch, vice president of Newcastle and Waratah State Electorate Councils and secretary of Newcastle Federal Electorate Council. Jones was elected to Newcastle City Council in 1959 and served as an Alderman until 1965. He was a member of the Shortland County Council (1961) and the Hunter District Water Board. John Price (New South Wales Politician)
John Charles Price (born 14 May 1939) is an Australian politician, elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1984 to his retirement in 2007, including as the first Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2007. Early life and career Price was born in Mayfield, New South Wales and was educated at Mayfield East Public School and Newcastle Technical High School. Price later obtained certificates in marine engineering technology and structural engineering from Newcastle Technical College before gaining a second class certificate of engineering competency (steam) from the Commonwealth Department of Shipping and Transport. Price began a fitter and machinist apprenticeship with the State Dockyard in 1956 before spending many years as a draughtsman, marine engineer and manager in the shipbuilding industry. Elections were held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 24 March 1984. The Labor government led by Neville Wran won a fourth term in office, though with a reduced (if still sizeable) majority and a 7% swing against it. As the two previous elections each saw the sitting Opposition Leader lose the election and failing to be elected to Parliament, the 1984 election saw Nick Greiner becoming the first Opposition Leader to lose an election and retain his seat since Pat Hills in 1974. Independents Ted Mack and John Hatton retained their seats of North Shore and South Coast respectively. They were joined on the cross benches by a third independent and Bruce Duncan. The Supreme Court of New South Wales is the highest state court of the Australian State of New South Wales. It has unlimited jurisdiction within the state in civil matters, and hears the most serious criminal matters. Most common in racehorses, drug tests are also performed on horses in endurance riding and in international competition such as the Olympics and FEI-sanctioned competition.
