Salvo Post Office
The Salvo Post Office is a historic post office building located at Salvo, in Dare County, North Carolina, on the Outer Banks. It was built about 1910, and is a small frame building measuring 8 feet by 12 feet (about 2.4 by 3.6 meters). The interior consists of the post office lobby and the postmaster's workroom. It reflects a unique tradition of a portable building being purchased by succeeding postmasters and moved to their respective properties. It is recognized by the U.S. Postal Service as the second-smallest post office building in the nation, after the Ochopee Post Office in Florida. The building was restored after being damaged by fire in October 1992. Salvo, North Carolina
Salvo is a census-designated place located in Dare County, North Carolina, United States, on Hatteras Island, part of North Carolina's Outer Banks. As of the 2010 census, Salvo had a population of 229. Originally (with Rodanthe and Waves) part of the settlement of Chicamacomico, Salvo was originally known as "Clarks" or "Clarksville." The name "Salvo" allegedly stems from the American Civil War, during which a passing Union vessel spotted the settlement, which was not marked on their maps. The commanding officer ordered an attack, and a sailor marked the site on his map with the word "Salvo." The name was formally given to the town when it received a post office in 1901. The Salvo post office, ZIP code 27972, one of the smallest postal facilities in the United States, was damaged by an arsonist in 1992. Dare County, North Carolina
Dare County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,915. Its county seat is Manteo. Dare County is named after Virginia Dare, the first child born in the Americas to English parents, who was born within the county's current borders. Founded in 1870 from parts of Tyrrell, Currituck and Hyde counties, it consists of a large segment of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, along with Roanoke Island and a peninsula of land attached to the mainland. Most of the county consists of a string of resort communities along the Outer Banks. While lightly populated by year-round residents, the population swells during the summer with vacationers. Ochopee Post Office
The Ochopee Post Office is the smallest operating post office in the United States. Measuring a mere 61 square feet, it is a tiny shed on U.S. Route 41 in Collier County near Ochopee, Florida. It is located about east of the intersection of US 41 and State Road 29. Its ZIP code is 34141 in Area Code 239, Exchange 695. The building used to be a storage facility for irrigation pipes of an adjacent tomato farm. It was converted into a post office in 1953, after a fire destroyed Ochopee's previous post office, located in the Gaunt Company Store. The post office is fully functional, serving a three-county area, including the surrounding populations of Miccosukee and Seminole Native Americans.
