Saltley Academy
Saltley Academy is a Mixed-sex education, mixed secondary school located in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham, in the West Midlands (county), West Midlands of England. History Saltley Grammar School opened in the 1920s; by the 1960s it had upwards of 800 pupils. In the 1970s it was "converted" to a Community school (England and Wales), community school administered by Birmingham City Council. The school also gained specialist status as a Science College. In 2014 Saltley School was placed in special measures by Ofsted after a critical inspection report. The inspection had been undertaken after Saltley School had been connected to the Operation Trojan Horse scandal which affected a number of schools in Birmingham in 2014. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. Academies are self-governing non-profit charitable trusts and may receive additional support from personal or corporate sponsors, either financially or in kind. Academies are inspected and follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs and exclusions as other state schools and students sit the same national exams. Warwickshire County Cricket Club
Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Warwickshire. Its T20 team is called the Birmingham Bears. Founded in 1882, the club held minor status until it was elevated to first-class in 1894 pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895. Michael John Wise
Michael John Wise CBE, Military Cross, MC (17 August 1918 – 13 October 2015) was a British academic who served as a professor of geography at the University of London. Early life Michael Wise was born in Stafford in 1918, son of Harry Cuthbert Wise and Sarah Evelyn Wise. Education After attending Saltley Secondary School, Birmingham, he attended the University of Birmingham where he completed his BA in Geography in 1939. After war service he returned to Birmingham as an assistant lecturer and lecturer, gaining a Doctor of Philosophy, PhD in 1951. It was at this point that he met Gordon Warwick, a fellow assistant lecturer, who became a lifelong friend, with Wise being godfather to the latter's daughter. The Move
The Move were a British rock band of the late 1960s and the early 1970s. They scored nine top 20 UK singles in five years, but were among the most popular British bands not to find any real success in the United States. For most of their career the Move were led by guitarist, singer and songwriter Roy Wood. He wrote all the group's UK singles and, from 1968, also sang lead vocals on many songs. Initially, the band had four main vocalists (Wood, Carl Wayne, Trevor Burton and Chris "Ace" Kefford) who divided amongst themselves the lead vocal duties. The Move evolved from several mid-1960s Birmingham-based groups, including Carl Wayne & the Vikings, the Nightriders and the Mayfair Set. Carl Wayne
Carl Wayne (born Colin David Tooley; 18 August 1943 – 31 August 2004) was an English singer and actor. He is best remembered as the lead singer of The Move in the 1960s. Early days Wayne was born in Winson Green, Birmingham, and grew up in the Hodge Hill district of the city. Inspired by the American rock'n'roll of Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, he formed the G-Men in the late 1950s, and joined local band the Vikings, where his powerful baritone voice and pink stage suit helped make them one of the leading rock groups in the Midlands. His change of name was inspired by the movie star John Wayne, with the Scandinavian 'Carl' to fit into the 'Vikings' theme. In 1963 they followed in the footsteps of the Beatles and other Liverpool bands by performing in the clubs of Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Nuremberg. Maureen Jennings
Maureen Jennings (born 1939) is a British Canadian writer, most well known for the ''Detective Murdoch Series'', the basis for the television series ''Murdoch Mysteries''. She is credited as a Creative Consultant and occasionally writer for the show. Biography Maureen Jennings was born and grew up in Birmingham, England. She attended Saltley Academy, Saltley Grammar School. Jennings emigrated to Canada with her mother when she was seventeen. She studied psychology and philosophy at the University of Windsor and an MA in English Literature at the University of Toronto. Jennings initially taught at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and later practised as a psychotherapist. Her first successful writing was stage plays. Jennings is best known as the author of the ''Detective Murdoch Series'', which has been turned into a television series. Robert Michael Kilroy-Silk (born Robert Michael Silk; 19 May 1942) is an English former politician and broadcaster. After a decade as a university lecturer, he served as a Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) from 1974 to 1986. He left the House of Commons in 1986 in order to present a new daytime talk show, ''Kilroy'', which ran until 2004. He returned to politics, serving as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2004 to 2009. Sir Richard Stanley Barratt, CBE, QPM (11 August 1928 – 5 May 2013) was Chief Inspector of Constabulary from 1987 to 1990. Education Barratt was educated at Saltley Grammar School.
