Salsabil (Quran)
Salsabil ( ar, سلسبيل, romanized as ', ', ', ', ', ') is an Arabic term referring to a spring or fountain in paradise, mentioned in the Qur'an and in some hadiths. The term is also used as a common and proper noun. In the Quran In the Quran, the word is used once, to refer to a spring or fountain in paradise (Jannah). The sole quranic reference is in sura Al-Insan. There is also mention in some hadith. The verse may be in reference to the previous verse concerning the drink provided to those who enter paradise. "Salsabil" is usually but not always considered to be used as a proper noun, not a common noun, in this verse (that is, the capitalized name of one specific water source). The common noun is used in Hindustani to mean " nning limpid, sweet water", and in Persian for a pleasant beverage. Salsabil (fountain)
A salsabil (or salasabil), also known as a shadirwan, is a type of fountain which maximizes the surface area of the water. It is used for evaporative cooling of buildings, cooling and aeration of drinking water, and ornament (it has also been used to prevent eavesdropping). The water may flow in a thin sheet or thin streams, often over a wavy surface with many little waterfalls. Its use extends from southern Spain through north Africa and the Middle East to northern India. Etymology and name The name ''salsabil'' likely derives from a Qur'anic reference. The term ''shadirwan'' is also used for devices for aerating drinking water. However, the term ''shadirwan'' or ''shadirvan'' has slightly different uses in other cultures, such as designating a central ablutions fountain for a mosque courtyard in Turkish (see ''shadirvan''). Salsabil (horse)
Salsabil (18 January 1987 – October 1996) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from September 1989 to October 1990 she ran nine times and won seven races. Salsabil was one of the leading two-year-old fillies in Europe in 1989, winning two races including the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at the Longchamp. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut, Salsabil won both of Britain's Classic races for fillies: the 1000 Guineas over one mile at Newmarket and the Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She was then raced against colts and became the first filly for ninety years to win the Irish Derby at the Curragh. In autumn, Salsabil added a victory in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp but finished unplaced when favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October.
